View Full Version : Anyone ever been shot?

No, not by a BB gun. The story of your great uncle in 1967 doesn't count either. Has any forum member ever been shot by a bullet? I would love to hear you describe how it felt.
I haven't been shot but I bet it hurts.
You need to order a copy of this book: LEAD POISONING (http://www.amazon.com/Lead-Poisoning-True-Stories-Wrong/dp/0873646207/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1364163947&sr=1-1&keywords=lead+poisoning+pfouts) . . . it is hardcover, and used copies are ten bucks.

Probably a few vets here that have, but it's a pretty traumatic experience. Might not get one to talk about it.
Ask ronins brother. The good news is that he shot the guy who shot him.

I had a 45 caliber hole in my leg for a while. I was teaching a lady how to shoot and she had an "accidental" discharge at point blank range. To be honest, I didn't even know I had been shot. It was a 230gr FMJ that went through the inside of my right thigh. The pain was the worst over the next couple of days. My upper right leg was a solid bruise.

My youngest brother managed to shoot himself with one of my compact 9mm's. A Winchester Silvertip went through the meat of his palm. Literally took a half-round chunk out of the meaty part of his hand. I took him to the emergency room myself. He has never really had much interest in my handguns since.
I managed to get grazed at a range twice. First time a piece of shrapnel from a big-bore revolver- I think .44Mag- cut a slice in my right ear. Second time was a .38Spl that ricocheted off a rock and into my ankle. Had a hell of a bruise, would have been worse if I wasnt wearing decent leather boots. The fellow who took the shot "didnt realize we were still downrange" and "was aiming in a safe direction." My ass.
My uncle shot his brother in the back with rock salt in a drunken argument. That was an interesting weekend...

I stabbed myself in the leg with a broadhead.. I was chasing a woodchuck and had a second arrow pointing down for a backup arrow.. I brought that arm down as I brought my leg up and the 2 blade broadhead into my calf.. All it did was start tingling.. And got really warm.. When I tried to take my next step I fell.. I knew exactly what happened.. I looked at my pant leg saw the hole, pulled up my pant leg and saw blood pumping from my calf.
i was in the middle of nowhere so I took my sweaty bandana off my head and tied it tightly over the wound and hobbled to the closest house.. It hurt a little bit on the way to the neighbors house (1/4 mile away) but hurt most when I got to the ER and they were cleaning the wound.
i did however loose lots of blood and was really light headed. The neighbor asked what I wanted and I just said a cold cup of water and call my dad to come get me. He said my face was pure white...
So I didn't get shot per se but it was still a crappy situation but it was nice to know the ER nurses were impressed I knew what to do since I was in 8th grade..
moral of the story was of course don't run with arrows.. I don't know how many times I was told that and I'm pretty sure that's what kept me from thinking about how much it hurt. I knew my mom was going to be pissed and might not let me ever hunt again haha..

I've never been shot but i have been told it is like getting hit hard with a hammer without any pain for about a minute or two then the wound starts to burn like it is on fire then comes excruciating pain a few minutes after that.
Does it count if they were wearing armor?

That would make sense - the sensation is too overwhelming for the nerves to conduct in the initial shock. Then as blood flow quickly returns/multiplies to the area, they recover and start transmitting. They call it the "gate theory" of pain transmission - the idea that nerve data is like water in a pipe - only so much volume capacity in the pipe going to the brain. It's also why when you instinctively rub or clutch at an injury, it hurts a little less. Too much info going to the brain for all of it to get thru.

Took a good sized chunk 7.62 in the foot during my second tour in Iraq. The round impacted and fragmented a bit before it hit me. Felt the round penetrate my boot, but no pain was immediately felt. Adrenaline was running pretty high, there was a large volume of incoming enemy fire at the time, and we had already sustained one friendly WIA. I felt the pain a little while later, but it wasn't too bad. I was medevac'd to the CASH in Mosul after the initial surgery to remove the fragment. The pain I had to endure for a month after the fact, the daily cleansing and repacking of the wound, was much worse. Even with morphine. :(

I would guess that it also depends on which part of the body was hit as well. Taking one to the foot with many bones vs taking one to the abdomen fewer bones.
Cut and shot, 9mm. Rather be shot hurts less as time goes on.

I was thinking the same, i just didn't want to ask though.
I've never been shot, but the little entry hole isn't the part that scares me. All the possible internal damage is what scares me. On TV and movies somebody's always pressing something on the bullet hole to "stop the bleeding", and I always think "what about all the shredded tissues inside?"
I'm sure there ain't a damn thing romantic or adventurous about it.

I have seen many GSW's when I was in EMS in north Aurora and north Denver. Had a 22 come of a backstop at a range in Englewood and it hit me in the chest just hard enough to let me know it was there. They do go in clean and come out in pieces if at all.

I was shot in the left leg 6" below my knee. Went off the bone and out with a 22 Didn't hurt when it happend. Didn't know I got shot. Then the burn set in. I went to the ER. Aurora PD showed up and laughed. It didn't hurt didn't bleed much. When the nurse cleaned the wound and stuck a small hose in the hole to the other side. It hurt like a bitch. It hurt for a day. I was lucky real lucky. So much could have gone wrong.

Caught some birdshot in my arm when I was out hunting, I have no idea how far away the shooter was, but it hit hard enough to embed in my arm through my hunting gear.
I yelled and heard nothing, I know someone was out there, but they didn't want to own up to the fact they shot at something moving through the brush. It hurt, but only superficial damage. When my mother put peroxide and took the long tweezers to picking out the shot, now that hurt.

Went with the wife to her company Christmas party that was pushed into Jan. due to the owner being out of country. We left there and were walking back to the car and two thug trash P.O.S.'s walked by us and tried to pick a fight. I stood my ground and Jess (wife) stood inbetween us and one of them pushed her down. Well I lost it and socked the first guy and I thought I had knocked him out, I was working over the second guy when he came from behind me, and stuck a blade through the right side of my chest. It actually knocked me out for a second, but I got back up ready to go and Jess started screaming and ran and over grabbed me. The two guys took off running and I remember a few guys running after them, the Police and EMT's showing up, and I walked into the ambulance and passed out. Woke up in an MRI and freaked out, the doctor calmed me down and I passed back out. Got woke up by the an Officer Brooke's of the denver Pd and the doctor. The doctor said I flatlined twice during the night and they had to give me 13 pints of blood total over the course of the night. He also said the Knife would've gone all the way through but my rib stopped it from coming out my back so he guessed the blade was 8-10" long. I left my carry in the car because we were drinking, hard lesson learned, also was the last time I stepped foot in LODO. I guess I'm pretty lucky to still be here.

I've been stabbed. Upper arm with a large Bowie knife. Friend was unsheathing it next to me and... Oops. Blade went straight into the bone and I can safely say it suuuuuucked. Total shock, I managed to get out "dude you ruined my shirt" before getting woozy.

I had some idiot next to me at firing line fire off "accidentally" and hit my target mount while it was pulled all the way back in. The ricochet hit me right between the eyes hard enough to make me see stars, knocked my glasses off and bled pretty good. After chewing his ass, I went into the store and told them what had happened, and there was ZERO concern. They wouldn't even go talk to the guys. I grabbed my shit and left, will never go back into that place.

Took a 7.62 to the upper left chest....
Round impacted on the corner of my plate where the angled cut is, got destroyed mostly on the plate, but sent numerous chunks of shrap into my shoulder, pulled most of it out with a gerber multi-tool...tossed some dressing over it, took care of it when I got back to the FOB.
The impact in the plate hurt more than the shrapnel getting shot into my shoulder...
Had a bruise encompassing my left shoulder down to 3" under the nipple line in a big yellow/black/blue circle...
Shit hurt.
Never had a penetrating gun shot though...I consider myself fortunate. That was the only time I've been hit in my military career and I'm thankful it wasn't a 7.62x51 or 54, might've gone right through and that may've been it for me :P

The plate was written off as damaged and was destroyed as far as I know, once I got back from the field hospital after the bruise had subsided and I was X-Ray'd, MRI'd and a ton of other scans for internal bodily damage, I was issues a new set and sent back out.
Took about a month and a half for the bruise to go away....I was all sorts of colors, yellow, black, blue, brown,...and white people used to call African Americans "colored" lol
