A Wellington volunteer firefighter/paramedic was arrested early Sunday morning after shooting another man in the shoulder during a scuffle, according to Fort Collins police.

Cody Bettcher, 24, was arrested about 1 a.m. after shooting Derek Patterson, 22, who police said had shoved Bettcher's sister, 19.

After shooting Patterson, Bettcher used his paramedic training to help him until Patterson was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies, police said.

According to police, Bettcher and a friend dropped off Shawna Bettcher near the intersection of Grant and Myrtle so she could go to a party.

As she walked along the street, four men started harassing her, said police spokeswoman Rita Davis.

Davis said a friend riding in Bettcher's truck got out and confronted the group, and Patterson began trying to provoke him into a fight.

Bettcher remained inside the truck until Patterson made a charge toward his sister, Davis said - Patterson shoved Shawna Bettcher, and she slapped him back.

Bettcher got out of his truck, pointing a .45-caliber handgun up in the air, Davis said.

She said he then approached the group, told them to step away, and was then punched in the face by Patterson.

Bettcher then punched Patterson while holding the handgun, and "the gun accidentally discharged," Davis said.

Davis said Bettcher told his sister to call 911, ran to his truck, grabbed his paramedic rescue bag, and locked up his gun. He then took the phone from his sister, told police what had happened and said he was providing assistance to Patterson, Davis said.

Bettcher, a diesel mechanic for the city of Fort Collins and volunteer with the Wellington Fire Protection District, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and menacing with a handgun, Davis said.

Police didn't release any information on the incident until Monday because it was "contained" following Bettcher's arrest, Davis said.

Patterson may still face charges, Davis said. He underwent surgery on Sunday, she said, and couldn't speak to investigators.

An MCR spokesman on Monday afternoon said there was no patient by that name at the hospital.

Hey 2C! Been wondering if you were still around - maybe I missed your posts but I had the impression you weren't on the board much lately (been lurking a bit myself). Anyway, good to see ya, hope you're well.
