View Full Version : Thinking about a .308 semi for longer range "touches"

I already have a Springfield M-1A in National Match config and realize it would probably be cheapest overall to just buy it a scope kit but I'm toying with getting an AR-style platform to go with the SR-25-style mags I ordered from Magpul. Besides Larue's PredatAR or PredatOBR (which are asking $2807 and $3370 respectively), which platforms (preferably from manufacturers willing to give the finger to states and agencies backing these gun control proposals) have you had experience with and recommend from an accuracy standpoint? I'd be shooting benched or prone, probably at 300-500 yds, using factory ammo.
From what I've read, it doesn't seem I'd lose anything going with a 16-in barrel versus 18-in. Your experience?

Since nobody else has replied; I have often thought I might like an M1A because of the super reliable platform it is, that action will perform well in all weather conditions. My brother has one and has thought of getting the scope kit too. That being said..
I have a DPMS LR308 24" stainless bull barrel, my brother has a Larue OBR 7.62 20" barrel. My LR308 is a consistent 1/2 moa gun with factory match ammo and sometimes shoots even better with my handloads, performs far better than I expected for the $1K I spent on it. Great rifle and if you're only shooting out to 500 yards you really don't need to spend more unless you buy rifles as collector's items too, which I can understand if that's the case. The OBR shoots 1/4 moa with factory match ammo and is a solid gun, with the shorter barrel you will start to lose some velocity but again, that doesn't matter if you're only shooting out to 500 yards. I've noticed about 50 feet per second/per inch (shorter) reduction in velocity as a general rule. You can always look that up online and see what others are getting with shorter barrels though. A 16" is pretty short for a .308 in my opinion, I guess it just depends on what you're going to do with it. I like to shoot mine at extreme ranges and so need the longer barrel to get a full powder burn and therefore higher velocity. Good luck.

The PTR91's "HK91 / G3" can be sub moa guns, the roller block action is quite accurate.
I can ring steel pretty consistently at 600yds with battle ammo in my Sig 716 Patrol (16") with a 10x scope.
It did have to go back to Sig when I first got it to get it to run right. It's a keeper now.
I've been told PTR91's are hard on brass if that's a consideration.

I've owned a couple of LR-308 based custom builds. One had a 24" barrel and the second 18". Only thing special was the barrel, Geissele trigger and free float tube. Both were excellent shooters out to 800 yards. I expect I could have taken the 24" out to 1K plus, but always had trouble making the jump beyond 800.
Another one that I'm looking at is the Core 30. Billet upper/lower and comes in 16 and 18" barrel lengths. Price point is running around $2200 for the 16". Not a lot of info/reviews on the Core 30 but based on the build specs, appears solid.

Can't argue with those results; good choice on glass. Impressive for a 16" stock barrel but DPMS production barrels are pretty good out of the factory.

I'll chime in for DPMS LR308 Oracle. If you check around, most AR10s (SR25 types) will have DPMS something. Parts, uppers, lowers.
You can spend much more, but why? Even today you can get them for $1000-1200, and go from there. Why start at $2500-3000 and then throw more$$$ into it when you probably won't get more from it.
Even the M&P AR10s are going to start at $1400-1600.
I have one. Solid, reliable, shoots all ammo I've tried. 300+ yards I shoot 2 inch groups with a CCC 6-24X50 scope. That's me, not the rifle. If someone with more skill shoots, its MOA or sub.

The chamber fluting is pretty severe, and might make you think twice about reloading the brass.
the XTRAXN on a LaRue is a type of chamber fluting, but it's not very severe. In my (extremely limited) reloading experience, I wouldn't hesitate to reload the brass.

HK fluted brass is reloadable but keep it separate from brass for a bolt gun. I just reload it for the HK only.

Buds has this in stock http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/61646 I think it's the same one ark3 has. 1k for a 1/2 moa semi auto isn't bad. I'm thinking about one myself, but I was told my PSL project is taking up any gun funds right now.

That's not a lot of money for the ability to reach out there and touch something....
GnA recently did a review on the M&P 10. They were shooting sub MOA with 168s and a pencil barrel contour. Could be a viable option..

Looks like a good deal. I've read (on here somewhere) that Bud's isn't pulling 'high capacity' mags to ship to Colorado.
