So I let the pups out to use the restroom this morning when I realized someone stole a bicycle of my back porch. Both gates leading into my back yard are locked meaning the person cleared my 6' fence. The person went all the way around the house to steal my single speed road bike(valued at $150). They took my big easy cooker moved it close to the gate and used it to jump the fence. A disturbing fact is that this person took a hatchet that was on the wood pile, and either carried it with them while walking through my back yard. Or threw it over my fence in the front yard just cause This is the second time my house has been hit in the last 6 months. Someone stole some stuff out of my work van.
Dogs never made a peep.
Obviously had I known they were out there I couldn't engage them, just call the cops.
I'm concerned about a couple things.
Was this a recon trip to see the lay out of the house?
What was up with moving the hatchet?
What are my legal rights to get them off of my property? What should I do if i catch them in the act?
I've also been thinking about investing in some kind of CC security system which can be quite pricey, so for now some decent game camera.
Consider a Kritter Kam, a game camera, I believe they can be found for right at $100.00

What was up with moving the hatchet? IN THE WAY OR FOR DEFENSE
What are my legal rights [TRESPASSING / THEFT]to get them off of my property? What should I do if i catch them in the act? HOLD UNTIL LE ARRIVES, UNLESS THE THREAT IS REAL. THEN DO WHAT EVER IT IS YOUR CONSCIENCE ALLOWS. REMEMBER YOU POSTED THIS QUESTION ON THE WEB

FORGOT get new pups AND complain the NRA isn't doing enough to protect your gun rights;)

The first thing I would do is install a motion triggered light

double barreled shotgun, two blasts in the air?!?!?!
(oh...come on....someone had to say it)
Motion triggered light is good for passive deterrence. An IP camera (ethernet) with infrared LEDs for night vision is also good for monitoring and evidence collecting. Most IP cameras have phone apps available so you can check in on the feed from anywhere your phone gets a data signal, or anywhere you have internet access for a PC. Can record everything to an SD card or remote server.

Inside job-I believe the dogs are in on it !!
Landmines.
I would couple cameras!, Some motion lights and not leave anything very desireable in view. It is probably someone who can see in your yard and knows when you are gone.

What about permanent ink landmines? They make paintball landmines, gotta be some kind of better use for 'em. ;) Maybe the cops can find one or two purple jackasses running down the street... :)
costco has this cool new spotlight that tracks you as your moving.....bet it would be a hell of a deterrent

I know the grenades Tippmann used to make sucked. I always imagined the landmines being cooler. Sigh.

Regular landmines and you will find them yourself.
If I lived in Brighton I wouldn't leave anything outside I didn't want stolen.
Just saying.
You can probably buy them back at that flea market off of I-76 and 88th.

But my question is why do you have a hipster single speed road bike in Brighton? Most hipster live around cap hill and uptown. Good luck find them bro

Well said.
Was the bike locked up? Or just sitting there on the porch?
Probably kids. Is it spring break there? Read the mtn bike forums, there are always bikes getting ripped off.
I just started researching IP cameras recently... planning on installing one by the front door, one by the back door and one in the nursery for starters... maybe more later.
Here is one I'm leaning towards: http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI8910W-Network-Camera-Two-Way/dp/B006ZP8UOW/
It is wired or wireless... has infrared night vision (only up to 26 feet but I'm sure that is a limitation of the LEDs... you could put an infrared flood light right next to the camera for extended range)... it has pan and tilt (no zoom though)... you can set it to record images or video... you can access the feed on almost any device on your network (desktop, laptop, smartphone, tablet) and you can access while away from your network if you set it up correctly. You can even have it email you images when motion is detected.
For the price it seems pretty reasonable and gets fairly good reviews. I'm thinking about setting up a separate server just to record all simultaneous feeds... keeping at least a week's backlog of video.

I have this one in my house. It's ok. I use it to check on the dog on occasion and turn the motion detection on if gone over the weekend. You'll probably want the outside version though and I have no idea how senesitive the motion detection will be.

Well, I am getting a weird deja-vu...
For what it is worth, game cameras worked out pretty well for me, I have not gotten anything stolen (or vandalized) since.
For ANY IP camera know what you're getting! Read the fine print as some of them use DDNS (dynamic DNS) hosts based in China, which doesn't mean your video traffic flows through there, but I wouldn't want anything related to my home security talking to China. Others have your video traffic flow through their own servers (Logitech) -- not acceptable to me.

I'm using Logitech Wilife outdoor surveillance. Camera transmits video to your computer over the house wiring. USB adaptor plugs into wall socket and USB jack on computer. All this was bought on eBay. Blue Iris provides software to let you view video with smartphone or remotely from another computer. Computer must be running XP or Vista. Some of my computers crash using it. Finally I bought a Dell Vostro 400 dual core that is pretty stable. The software is a free download from Logitech.
There is a second generation Digital video security (DVS) called Logitech Alert. It is expensive and there is some doubt about future support from Logitech. Link is here:

When I was doing research Blue Iris was given consistently positive reviews. A lot of people prefer it over the original software included with the camera.
Do you have pictures or at least a description of your bike? Sometimes these idiots will post them on Craigslist...
I blame it on the unions.
I would throw another vote for getting some sort of CCTV.

Satan must be looking out for you. [Muaha]
Game cams are cheap and easy but not useful in high traffic area. Want 400 pics of the dog/kids running around? Maybe 1500 of that tree on a windy day?
Ever considered a bike lock?
There's a joke in here,,,
