I was wondering if anyone knows if a fake suppressor counts as a barrel extension
Only if it is permanently attached, just like a flash hider.

if anything is permanently attached to the barrel how the atf approves then it becomes part of the barrel

nope it's black and white
from atf.gov
The ATF procedure for measuring barrel length is to measure from the closed bolt (or breech-face) to
the furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device. Permanent methods of
attachment include full-fusion gas or electric steel-seam welding, high-temperature (1100°F) silver
soldering, or blind pinning with the pin head welded over. Barrels are measured by inserting a dowel rod
into the barrel until the rod stops against the bolt or breech-face. The rod is then marked at the
furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device, withdrawn from the barrel, and
measured.

Which is why you see a lot of "PINNED" 14.5 bbls for sale. [fail] You want short SBR the damn thing and leave it at that. I've seen some decent deals on uppers until the deal killer sentence. F/hider permanently attached.
Make sure it's "fake". The whole barrel would be a silencer if there is any possiblity that the extension could reduce the sound level.

+1 but there is an exception that is a bulgarian 4 piece booster cone. while it does have a single cone inside of it it is not considered a suppressor since it doesn't lower the the sound enough in the atf's eyes.
