View Full Version : Silly UPS
I ordered a small firearm part the other day. You should see the tour it is going on across the western states.
Started life in Kansas City, MO.
Then it went all the way past my house to West Valley City, UT.
It went from there to its current location in Billings, MT.
Looks like it is planning on hitting my house sometime on Monday.
I don't know anything about the daily operations of UPS but this seems a bit inefficient to me.

Sounds reasonable if the UPS guy is on the Rocky Mountain High.
having driven a route like that I have to say, it is inefficient, however you have to do what your dispatcher says. It may have been a miss pull at ups when it was loaded on the truck and they found it in Utah and the only way they could get it rerouted was to send it to Montana first.

We should run a pool on where it will end up next. I've had an order from Fort Collins routed through Denver to get to Greeley with USPS.
Who'd you order from. I can't remember but I had a part from kansas city, mo do the same exact route...

You know that sometimes UPS software will insert fake status on a package to keep customers thinking that their package is tracked, when its not scanned for awhile.

Strange, every order I've had from Midway have come due east on I-70 to Commerce City, then delivered from there.
Had the same thing happen from Midway/UPS. Got all excited thinking it would be delivered that day or the next...and it kept on truckin [fail]
It is midway and their nitro express shipping (UPS to USPS). pretty much the same route my last package from them except it made it to CA before heading to MT.

So was it UPS or USPS? USPS...totally understand. UPS...I'd be surprised.

Huh, I never once had a problem with them, but I didn't track every one either. Some may have done a US tour before getting to me and I'd ever know.

I had a package once that did the around the US tour. RI to CO. then it took off and went to CA before going back to RI and back to here. [facepalm]

I'm always amazed at how many stops is takes for a package to get from PSA in South Carolina to my house. The longest one was:
Columbia, SC - Knoxville, TN - Nashville, TN - Earth City, MO - Kansas City, KS - Lenexa, KS - Commerce City, CO - Englewood, CO - Littleton!

a LOT of UPS's trailers from major centers like KC go onto trains and dispersed to inter-modal yards, so that very well could be the case here. It happens pretty often actually with ground shipments that go in and out of certain zones.
One of our biggest yard facilities happens to be in KC, we also have one in Billings, and Denver, and UP has one in SLC.
ie w/ground, depending on origin and destination, shipments can get bounced around like a pin ball because keep in mind, they are moving a LOT of packages from a single origination point to pretty much anywhere in the US and beyond, so your single package, can move to weird places based on where more packages in the same semi trailer are going, then expand that to a train with about 150 cars on it, and 2 trailers per car.....
Point being the shear volume of parcels UPS moves every day, and the amount of origins and destinations, it's truly amazing they don't screw it up more often than they do. But it sure does seem kinda crazy when to pay attention to tracking on stuff.

Seriously, I have never had a big, no...any, problem with UPS. And I used to ship frozen samples FEDEX overnight in coolers and had a problem maybe once a year, if that.
You are pretty foolish if you use the USPS for anything "serious" or anything that needs to be there by a certain time. OK, X-Mas gifts can get there a day late....blood samples can't. Use FedEx if it's serious binnuss.
So was it UPS or USPS? USPS...totally understand. UPS...I'd be surprised.
US Post Office is delivering some United Parcel Service packages. They have been doing that fro several months. They travel by United Parcel Service trucks to the local center then get transferred to the US Post Office system for final delivery. So far I've only had it happen when choosing the cheapest shipping choice when placing my order. I adds a day or two to the delivery time for me. It's frustrating to see UPS tracking a package get to Commerce City on Thursday, then to my local US Post Office on Friday to be delivered on Monday.

If you use the cheap "nitro express shipping" it goes from UPS to USPS for final delivery. Just like amazons "super saver shipping" goes from Fedex to USPS.

SSBob, my larger Midway orders that came as "UPS Ground" followed the path you outlined. But my smaller orders ($4.88 shipping w/o coupon) came via "UPS Mail Innovations"
(http://www.upsmailinnovations.com/). They followed the same path outlined above: MO->UT->MT. "Tracking" indicated they were 1-2 days away from delivery, but they arrived on that day (even though the tacking status showed they were in MT).
Well, the tracking thingy says my stuff is still in Billings, MO.
I find that hard to believe since I just took my package out of the mail box.
