View Full Version : Razr maxx HD or iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s
Need a new phone and those 3 are my options I like with Verizon, what's the goods and bads. I've always had droids, just got an iPad and like it but not sure about the iPhone yet.
Im going tomorrow so need info quick!
Wife needs a new phone too so was thinking the iPhone 4s. Thoughts on that?
I have the 4S and love it. Very easy to use and never crashes or freezes. I have an IPad also and have to say I am much happier with the IPhone than the iPad.
My daughter has the iPhone 5 and the screen really isn't that much bigger than my 4S. The main difference is the 5 is a 4G phone where as the 4S is strictly 3G.
Okay good to know on the 4g deal
Iphone 5 all the way. Iphone 4's look so bulky now lol.
More freedom with Android..... you do like freedom and people not telling you what to do. Right sniper7?

I'm not much of a techie guy and I use my phone mostly as a phone and for checking email. But I recently got a Razr Maxx HD and it's gotta be the closest thing to a perfect phone there is. And the battery life is phenomenal. Even for a knucklehead like me it's pretty intuitive and easy to use.
I really like the fact that I usually only have to charge it like every 3 days. I don't like the fact it comes loaded with a bunch of bloatware. Eventually I'll figure out how to get rid of it.
Never tried Apple products.

I love my iPhone 5. My wife has the 4s. We are an Apple house though, both have Macs, iPads, iPhones, so we're all in the ecosystem. It's nice that when I take a pic of our son, it will show up on all the devices without really doing anything other than a one time config. I was using Android several years ago on a HTC Hero and absolutely hated it. But from what I've been reading the new version of Android is pretty good. The software updates are hit and miss on Android phones though. At least with Apple you will get a good 2 years of OS updates. Go play with them, try fitting them in your pocket. The 4S is a good phone, but if you can afford the extra $100, I would get your wife the 5. The 4s doesn't have 4g LTE. Just be aware, the sales peeps at Verizon will push the droid phones because they get an extra commission. Also, the iPhone 5s is probably coming out in Aug/Sept time frame, so don't be surprised.

[LOL]YES! That's awesome! One more thing Android OS has over iPhone: Flash! A lot of sites still haven't converted to HTML5 (supposedly to eliminate the need for flash support- don't quote me, I'm not a big techie guy). If you don't use the BBC News app and just go web, I had problems in the past with iPhone not able to load video (just one example), but on my previous and current droid phones it works great! I have the RAZR Maxx (non-HD) and I love it. If I didn't have another year to go I'd get the HD before you could say "Obama sucks!"

I feel like when the Iphone first came out they were a game changer and actually had something over other smart phones, and that's why I bought one. After my 3gs the iphone lineup just lagged behind and apple didn't have the software or options I wanted. It seems to me that now the Iphones are marketed on brand loyalty and android phones are the ones making the improvements.

Buy the Razr if you are a technological person, get an iphone if technology scares you. But dont get the 4S or the 5. The 5S and 6 will be out in a few months, buying the old one at this point would be a mistake.
How about galaxy note2? I have to say it's THE BEST PHONE now days out of everything I've tried (including iphones).
4G LTE rocks!

If you're going iphone don't go backwards, get the 5. Apps evolve and the old hardware starts to slow down.
Since you already have an iPad, the iPhone makes sense. Once you get iCloud going and things seamlessly share between the two it makes life a lot more simple.
Ive been tempted my the likes of a Galaxy but I always come back to iPhone for apps, life integration, and simplicity.
I voted iPhone 5 but would "jailbreak" any iPhone.
That's the issue, I love my current droid razr. But since I got the iPad I feel the integration would really be nice to have. Especially since I take a ton of pictures. The money isn't an issue, just curious what the goods and bads are

What does jail breaking do for you?
I have iOS, would recommend it. I've used android as well and iOS is more stable. But if you choose apple wait as there will be a new phone out soon

I have and am currently typing on an iPhone 4S and love it but I never use Siri and actually think she's a bitch and more of a pain in the ass than she's worth and to me not worth the extra $50. With that being said if you want the newer 5 the only problem with that is the 6 is suppose to be out very soon but I'm sure you don't want to wait but would kind of suck to buy a new phone and have it be outdated by the newest version a couple months later. My .02 on the iPhone anyway.

Yeah what he said.... Yeah! Just beat me to it kwando. :)
Oh one other thing, if you went with a 4 or 4S you could also get the morphie juice jack pro. It's a battery pack/charger that give you an full charge and a half which is a huge plus! The disadvantage is it turns your phone into a brick and it costs a pretty penny but it been worth it to me as I go through two+ full charges everyday!

Me either until I started researching how to jailbreak your iPhone. Here are supposedly reasons not to:

Get the 5. You say you have an iPad, then your already familiar with the operating system. The two work well together, take pic with your phone and it shows up on the iPad. Great combination!

Get an Iphone - that's the only phone that Magpul makes a case for.
And that's about the only valid argument to get one. Hi, my name is blacklabel and I'm an Android fanboy.
I've had 2 iPhones and as long as your good with Apple telling you what you can and can't do with YOUR phone, I guess it's OK. I've been on Android for my last 2 phones and far prefer it to being locked into the Apple money making machine. I love my Galaxy S3 and if I were looking into a new phone would probably go with a Galaxy S4.
Can someone please explain what they mean by apple limiting you compared to the android.

I owned multiple non-Apple smart phones before I took the plunge and bought an Iphone and I've never regretted it. The thing just works and works well. I had always loathed Apple before that, and still don't consider myself a fanboy at all, but I do like their equipment. I've been waiting for Magpul to relase their Iphone 5 case before I upgrade from my Iphone 4. Found one at DSG this week so it should be here any day and I'll get my new phone.

android, simple easy
i use it to sync with my computer, that is more important to me than using it to share photos on an i pad, but i also have a an android tablet that is way better than my wifes' ipad.
I have had the iphone 4 and now have the 5 and IMHO its the most stable smart phone out. The wife has the Galaxy note 2 and thats cool if you don't mind holding a brick up to your head.
If you want a stable phone that works, go Apple. I've had a smartphone since they were invented, seriously I started with the Kyocera 6035 when they came out. I currently have the iPhone 4s and its the most stable smartphone I've had. Btw I hate Apple but their stuff works and works well.

I've always preferred Android to iOS but I've gotten to the point where I think Google is downright evil. They make their money by processing information and selling it and make no bones about digging through anything passing through their servers. In contrast, Apple makes its money selling hardware enabled by slick software but at the end of the day, it's about the hardware. I'm inclined these days to swap from my Android to an iPhone although I'm waiting to see if there's an announcement coming for the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini (new smartphones are getting way too big IMO).
Can someone please explain what they mean by apple limiting you compared to the android.
I'll give you an example that I'm familiar with:
I was having an engine problem with my 2004 Tahoe. I wanted to diagnose and repair the problem myself, I was on Android. A friend of mine was also having a problem that he wanted to diagnose and repair himself on his Honda, he was on iPhone.
I was able to buy a generic OBD2 scan tool on Amazon ($24) that connects to the phone via bluetooth. I connected the OBD2 scan tool to my test port under the dash and was easily able to pair the scan tool to my phone via bluetooth. I was able to use a free version of the Android Torque application to then diagnose, I repaired the problem (engine coolant sensor - $25), and reset the trouble code in the truck's ECM. I found the Torque app to be so cool I ended up buying the full version which was about $9 or $10 if I remember correctly.
My friend on iPhone attempted to do the same. He could never get the device to pair to the phone. After much research he found out that not all bluetooth devices are enabled for connection to the iPhone. Headsets are pretty much wide open, but to use something other than the headset requires approval from Apple (equals $$ from developer for Apple to support their bluetooth stack). The Apple software to do the same functions that I did ran somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 from the App store + you had to buy their OBD2 scan tool which was enabled to work with the iPhone which was about another $100. He ended up using his Android tablet to do the job.
On Android I easily have the ability to get apps outside of the Google App Store. I get free apps of the day or discounted apps through the Amazon app store, for example. "Free" doesn't fly on Apple iPhones, unless you jail break them.
Apple isn't about flexibility or freedom. You get what they have. Apple takes the approach that if they don't have it, you didn't really need it. I'm of the opinion that I paid for the damn phone, it's mine, and I want to do with it what I want.
The one that doesn't cost $30 to call tech support.

For the price the 4S is probably the way to go. Has most of the same features as the 5, but you have a 0.3" smaller screen and a slower processor than the 5...if those two things are worth the extra money to you..,then get a 5.
I came from the Droid life....never gonna go back.
Get the latest and most expensive, -anything else and the cool kids will snicker at you.
-my flip-phone (that was free for signing the contract) is from 2005.

I LOVE my 5. It's a pretty slick piece of kit.
Can someone please explain what they mean by apple limiting you compared to the android.
The flexibility of the operating system is what the peeps are talking about. Both allow you to do basic configuration changes, such as set a picture for your home and lock screen, assigning sounds, adding aps, etc, etc.... The difference is that an Android OS allows you more customization choices by enabling advanced settings that apple phones do not have, or at the very least are not exposed without Jail breaking the phone, "topic for another day". Now, while you may think ultimate customization is the key, keep in mind that there is a point of no return. I can't tell you how many hours I spent trying to figure out why my daughter’s galaxy was eating away at the battery. She had customized that thing so much it was a damn slug, granted it looked cool, but shit, I could never get it to run right again. Pain in the ass! If you’re a tech head, and love to play with features and functions till your blue in the face, the Android is your buddy.. Apple phones just flat work, the interface is smooth and works well, and has in my opinion more than enough customizable features. Some say the Android apps are better, and there are more free ones to choose from, well to each his own. I will however say I doubt you will find an Apple owner who cant find an app he or she is looking for, or one that cant meet there needs. You mentioned you had an ipad, why go through the brain damage with another OS when you’re already there? Just my 2 cents worth....

Lots of people making a mass exodus from iPhone to Android these days. Probably a pretty good reason for that.

Be careful with the iphone 5, the screens are much more brittle. I've had many friends drop it just once and then the screen is useless. It's now replaceable for $300... I keep hearing great things about the Galaxy S3 or whatever it is.
The SGS3 gets a lot of attention but be sure to check out the HTC Evo LTE. I've had both & the HTC phone is a better device.
Edit: that statement is obviously carrier specific so find out the name of the device for your carrier. The phone's generic name is the HTC One.

I would HIGHLY suggest this as well. The new DNA is a phenomenal device. One of my buddies who was a devout iPhone user for many years had recently purchased one when he say how little the iPhone 5 had offered him over his beloved iPhone 4. Since he asked me right when the DNA was released and was a VZW customer I told him to give it a look and I thought he might like it. He updated me a few days into owning it and said he had listened to me earlier as it was a better device in every way than any iPhone he had ever used. He just thought that I was an Android fanboi the way he was an Apple fanboi. Now that he has come to the dark side he sees that it was a neutral decision that brought me to Android in the first place. His words, not mine.

Another thing worth considering is physical size of the phone. I had an HTC rezound before the DNA and it was the perfect size. It took me awhile to pull the trigger on the DNA because of the larger size, however what I didn't consider was how thin the DNA was compared to my rezound. With an Otterbox, my DNA is the same thickness if not thinner than my previous phone. Just something to think about.

Thats right!
We decided to wait until the next iPhone comes out and both get new iPhone 5 when they drop the price $100. I was sold on the razr maxx hd while at Verizon but didn't bite the bullet. My uncle has an iPhone 5 and I messed with that thing tonight at dinner at the buckhorn exchange and decided I want that phone as did my wife.

Good for you wise decision in both waiting and saving money plus you can also demo the new one before your final decision.
I figure we both already have 4g phones. We aren't in desperate need for new phones other than the fact we can go through batteries pretty dang quick. But we have chargers all over the place so no big deal

I gave up on un-brainwashing people years ago. It's just so much easier to enjoy amazing mobile devices w/o worrying about converting others like it's a religion. Most Apple users couple learn something from that.

In fondling different devices, comparing specs, and just doing research in general, I've come to the conclusion that when you take all things into consideration, and put comparable devices against one another (i.e. the latest and Greatest from each company), arguing smart phones is like arguing pistols, it all comes down to personal preference. I don't think the newest Samsung, Motorola, or iPhone is better than my HTC, but I bet they all perform about the same. I've become not only a loyal android user, but an HTC user as well. They work very well, and the layout of the phone remains relatively unchanged from phone to phone, so I don't have to relearn the device every time. Just my humble opinion on the smart phone battle.

I don't think my iPhone is better than your droid. It's just better for me. We play well together. I hated on Apple for quite a while after a poor experience with the original iMac. Swore off Apple for years. Gave them a second chance and now I'm an Apple whore. Works for me.

personally, I say iphone 5. I ended up getting a 5 because all of my friends have 4's or newer, my job issued me a 4s for work purposes and about 90% of the people I work with have Iphones. the compatibility is just to nice to have.
Well here's an update for you...my wife dropped her phone in the washer. The new I phones aren't out. 16gb iPhone 5 for $200 a piece....or $150 for a RAZR Max HD plus an extra $50 off and my wife wanted the RAZR HD for only $49.99 plus I bitched about a few things and got $20 off our bill for the next 2 months.
No iPhone here! RAZR Maxx HD and loving the battery life! Not to mention 32gb and expanded 16gb sim card from my old phone.
Wife got an otter box commuter series in pink. I want one in camp but they only make red white and black....meh.
If it had to be 1 of the 3 then the Razr. But as I can have any smart phone I went for the HTC One. It syncs my work email and calendar so it's great for me.
