since .223 is cheaper and easier to find. and my ar15 can shoot both. any reason for me to get 5.56 over .223 if I'm just target shooting?

Military brass is better

The only reason i'd use 223 is if I had a bolt gun or hunting

Nope. Get what you can find and plink away. My reloads are loaded to .223 specs and shoot just fine. Although I did find out one day that my pet load doesn't cycle well in an FN SCAR.

No reason. The reality is that for stuff actually on store shelves, there probably is no difference. The military specifications allow for ammo that would present higher pressures in a SAAMI .223 Remington chamber but the odds are that anything on commercial shelves won't really push SAAMI specs. Explicitly military surplus stuff might be a hair high for some lots, however.

US manufactured stuff all comes off the same production lines with the exception of Lake City which comes off dedicated lines operated by ATK (ie., Federal).

thanks everyone. I'll just stick with buying .223 ammo for target.
