Today I had a very quick look at what appeared to be 16"-18" DPMS. What was different or caught my eye, was this model had a rifle length gas system on a carbine length (I believe) with a very nice free float slim handguard, Magpul ACS Buttstock, and Magpul Moe grip. I didn't have time to study it for more than a minute, but it caught my attention. Having a rifle DI gas tube on a carbine length rifle.

Has anyone seen this model and how do you think the extra length gas system would shoot?

Just found it - Tac 2. This looks like an awesome weapon.

Nothing really new, essentially a "Dissipator" they can have issues with cycling certain loads. Been around for awhile.

Interesting handguard, bet it weights a ton.

Old skool look of a dissipator (actually a fake dizzy), digging the retro handguards though.

Dpms' copy of bushmaster dissy has been around. Nowadays carbine system is reliable, dissy is just a matter of option IMHO.

I just got a PSA (mock) Dissy upper this week. Looks cool. Ran great on a short function fire and zero.

Gonna blow it out at the RK show tomorrow in the Springs.

I'm in the process of building a dissy as well. Like the longer sight radius and i can get my weak hand out further to support the weapon.

Hey NavyBob
Yes I have one. Its the TAC2. Im not sure when the came out but I saw the gun on a 2012 Shotshow video. I really like it and have put about 350 rounds through it so far. The rifle length system is working well as it has minimal recoil. I was told they are hard to come by and I've not seen any since I got mine(Dec12,2012). It has a 16" heavy barrel with the phantom flash hider. Sorry to talk so much but I love it.

Welcome to the site Don. Don't worry about seeming to chatty, it's that sort of feedback that our members love.

I know a lot of people in the past have questioned DPMS's quality, but outside of some of their heavy rails, they are not a lot different from STAG or Bushmaster. I have met a few who swear by them and have never had a problem. After my first DPMS and STAG I just started to build my own so I can not say their bad or good.

Did you pay the $1200 MSRP or did you get it for much less, if you don't mind me asking? [Beer]

The only difference between a Dissipator and a Carbine is that the Carbines FSP is staked as the Gas Block. A dissipators Gas Block is staked the same as a carbine but it has a NON gas block FSP staked at Rifle length from the breech end.

*IF* you have a dissipator setup and its having problems, it's not because its a dissipator, as they function essentially just like any other carbine.

I finally got to shoot my DPMS yesterday....about 60-70 rounds with absolutely no problems.

That is a fake dizzy essentially, right, carbine/mid length gas low pro under handguards.

Thee original Dissipator is rifle length gas with a 15" barrel............. (http://pullig.dyndns.org/retroblackrifle/ModGde/CrbGde/605.html)

This whole page on CALGUNs has a write up on what a "Dizzy" is. (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=493277)

A 16" barrel with a rifle gas has had timing issues with cycling.

Essentiall with the modern advent of free float rails we all have Dizzy's right? [Coffee]

Actually I paid $1299. I see on the website their going for $1200? When I went to buy I was originally going to buy a Diamondback but I'd read about a lot of things going wrong with them(cracks in the receivers, broken triggers, bad gas rings) so I was liking what I saw in the TAC2. I just didn't feel good going with the D.B. and my brother has had good use out of his DPMS so I bought it December 12, two days before the Sandy hook incident or I would have paid a lot more.
This is my first AR,my first rifle I bought is an M+M AKM(assembled in Commerce city) and I also have a Benelli Supernova tactical(pistol grip, desert camo).
I have put a new trigger/hammer spring kit in it which fixed the not-so-great trigger it came with. As to the heavy handguard, yeah its a little on the heavy side. Right now I have a Surefire combatlightw/pressure switch, Magpul angled foregrip, and a Bushnell TRS-25 w/a Alamofourstar DLOC mount and a full magazine its weighing in right at 10 pounds. A little heavy for my 5'1"wife but I'm okay with it now. Thanks for asking Skully

Im sorry I forgot to mention that I was reading up on the TAC2's rifle length gas system(I think it was"Guns&Ammo" magazine) and it was mentioned that they opened up the gas port to compensate for the longer gas tube. So far after 350 rounds I haven't had any failures to eject, feed or any misfires either. Of course there's always a first time so we'll see. I've shot mostly the Prvi Partisan m193, but some American Eagle .223 and some of the Winchester frangible 5.56. You guys have any input on this because I'm no expert and like getting opinions and advice. Thanks

There is no need to compensate. AR-15 DI system is based on m16 20" rifle specs... The FTE issue happened on the early carbine model. The rifle length gas system on a carbine length barrel was designed to solve those early issues. As I mentioned, nowadays, carbine is as much reliable as rifle that reliability shouldn't be much factor in choosing having a dissy. [Flower]
