Not sure if you folks in the Denver Metro area know, but if you know anyone looking to adopt/rescue a dog, Maxfund is the place to go! Last Saturday we adopted Miki, she's a 10 year old (next month) Golden Retriever and a cancer survivor. She had a cancerous tumor on her lip and to remove it she lost part of her jaw. We've been doing our best to give her the best home and she'll give us and our other dog, Bear, years of fun and companionship. The people that work at Maxfund are by far the nicest folks I've ever dealt with when it comes to animals. Just a little positivity to take your guys' minds off all the bad things that have been happening lately. [Beer]
Anyway, thought I'd share the new addition to our family with all of you, and without further stalling, here are the pics:

Since she's missing part of her jaw, her tongue sticks out a bit, and it's adorable! But watch out for the drool.

Beautiful girl, and thanks for adopting an older pet.
We didn't realize until looking at the paperwork (previous owners had meticulously tracked her life, from birth to giving her up) that she was born just 2 weeks before Bear, so they'll both be turning 10 next month! Crazy. We didn't want to subject our mellow tempered GSD/Akita to a rambunctious puppy.

I have an incredibly dim view of owners giving up animals, dogs are social creatures, it's like giving away a 10yr old child. Things get tough? -give the dog to the pound... complete losers.

Just a little history on the MaxFund. It was started by a successful Denver business man Art Leisenring who dearly loved dogs. Art was my ex's uncle.
The 'Max' came from his favorite poodle 'Maximilian'. Art setup a trust to keep the MaxFund operating as a 'no-kill' shelter and pretty much self-sustaining.
Just FYI

Good for you. I worked a bit with MaxFund when I was a director at our local shelter. Top notch place. Miki will love you forever for helping her. That's a great gift.

Nice job!

We've adopted two different terrier mixes from the Maxfund.

The first was an eight week-old Wheaten / Chow mix who carried an attitude through her fourteen year life. It bothered us not as she was a wonderful companion.

After we lost her we waited about six-months and adopted an "unadoptable" seven to eight year-old male Wheaten mix.

Like ourselves, our pets have their own personalities and quirks. They adapt to us and we adapt to them.

We send out a heartfelt "Thank You" to the Maxfund for blessing us with the guardianship of these two wonderful companions!

Keep up the great work!!

Glad to see you both found each other.

Glad to see the pup get out of max fund. I've not had any good experience with them and do not recommend them to anyone. :) Glad it worked out for both of you.

That is awesome and congrats. Never heard of MaxFun before.

Our two dogs both just turned 2 and we got them at the same time from the Petsmart outlet for Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

Well this is totally understandable... The guy had no other choice, he got divorced, and got Miki in the settlement, then his house got foreclosed on and he couldn't find a place that allowed dogs or would be good for her. I totally get it, it was either give her up for adoption or something worse. I don't have an ill opinion of the previous owner, as it would suck to be forced into a similar situation.

Yeah, we read that and the thing that really got us was the "no kill" part! Seriously, their employees are as big of dog lovers as me and my brother, and the founder, Art, is a hero in my book.

Giving a dog up is NOTHING like giving a child up.....

We adopted both of our dogs from Every Creature Counts. Each of these no kill shelters are run by saints. We have been very fortunate in finding our companions. Glad you were able to find a great dog and let it enjoy it's "Golden" years with you and your family.

Good on you for adopting Miki...especially since she's a cancer survivor. She looks like a happy pooch!

How's the new family member settling in?

How's the new family member settling in?
Just great... she finally learned the dog door and has it down, and Bear is starting to warm up more to her, he's not as jealous. Found out the other night my annoying cousin's dog doesn't get along well with her, so there's a perfectly good reason for the cousin to not be allowed over. Tomorrow marks one week, and thus far all is well! [Beer]
