While I've trained literally hundreds of folks to use the M16, there's one person I will not train myself: my Bride. Not to say she's a "problem student" or anything of the sort; girl's got everything but taste in men (thank God)! I've been around enough to know that there are certain things one doesn't do and teaching loved ones "stuff" is a sure path to perdition.
Any recommended courses/teachers out there in COS-land? I've got some friends in town who could do it but if there's something already going I'd be interested. I'm looking for a very patient instructor (male or female) to do basic functioning and marksmanship; she's going to Thunder Ranch next September for Urban Rifle

LMS Defense is coming to Denver the first week of December. I think there's even a .mil discount for her being your wife. The two instructors coming are top notch guys, one is an active duty Special Operations Marine and the other is a SWAT instructor out of New Mexico. good guys even if we don't always see eye to eye.

Thanks! I don't think she needs "fast-paced and challenging" though, she'll get that at TR. I'm looking for basic in a slow and patient forum/
Coming from the SOF community I have some baggage with/about "special Ops Marines" -full disclosure: I was/"am" a Marine and think they're the finest light-Infantry/combined arms/amphibious force in the world. I've met very few who have a SOF mindset.

In that case, I'd check with Steve Materkowski. Very competent guy, super patient, does a lot of NRA and womens stuff and is an adjunt instructor for Andy Stanford.

Plus he's local. I'll also extend an invitation to go out with Heather and I when we 'make' payments and practice. Its pretty much a standing offer for anyone that wants to. Caveat, its all drills and instruction, we never really 'plink'.
Take her to a club shoot for the basics.. if not line up something with Heather (Kelly's much... MUCH... better half) and she'll learn a lot.

Cool! I'd be happy to take Kelly up on his offer, and especially glad to have another gal along. I'm also looking forward to getting out to the club range at first opportunity for a club shoot. Right now I don't have the left-hand Stag specifically intended for Tami's use (as well as it's right-hand counterpart for MY use) in my possession, merely an ArmaLite M15 that I haven't even shot yet.
As I wrote elsewhere I do need to get this M15 on the range and find out why it was having problems - the bolt "issue" appears resolved - but I owe the Oregon cop who helped my son out 1 each complete AR bolt. My son's now a reasonably well-trained AR shooter - after his first deployment, especially - and the fact that he's got about half of the left windage dialed in makes me think we've got a problem. We'll see ...

We'll see ... Sounds like it could be a canted FSB. Unload the rifle and pull the upper off, and pull the BCG. Make sure it is unloaded and then look down the barrel from the muzzle end, is the FSB leaning one way or the other? If the front sight base is leaning towards one side it is an easy fix. Put the upper in a vice with a block. Then pull out the precision tool I like to call a rubber mallet. Give it a solid whack on the side it is leaning and it should pop right into the grooves and be perfectly straigth up and down.
Without an AR in my hands I always get confused but if I remember right since you side left windage when looking down the barrel the FSB will look like it is leaning towards the right.
Come to the shoot tomorrow,, We could take a look at it..

Would love to, but have a previous obligation. From the calendar it looks as though there a shoot on 18 November; I expect I can make that one.

Could be. These sights are the ArmaLite "bolt on" (the gun was originally a flat-top front and rear). The front sight base appears to be straight. Once I get on a range and zero (may go out to Ikes next week) then I'll have a better idea of what might be going on.
Thanks!
