When did Walmart start asking wether you are buying ammo for a rifle or handgun??? And this was after I showed her my ID so it wasnt to see if I was old enough... Anyone else get asked this when they clearly look over 30 or after they have already showed thier ID..
I swear employees freak out at the mention of ammo... Like they are terrified to sell it.. I understand if the buyer looks like he is bat shit crazy.. Or a gang banger type guy with his friends with dread locks looking like they were going to go smoke after they buy the ammo but for someone going in saying they are looking for some 22lr I think you can relax a little bit and not look at me like I'm a criminal because I want the 3 box limit..question and mini rant over
Ive been asked it for .22lr at walmart before
Wait you got ammo at walmart!!???

I've never been asked. But at the same time, if they're asking me that and I've got a box of .223, I would be questioning whether they should be working in the sporting goods section. At the front cash register, not so much, but you're right, why in the world would they care? Maybe they were trying to make small talk because of nervousness?
Been that way for a while for certain calibers. 45 for example, their computer says it can go in a handgun or a rifle. Gotta be 18 for rifle, 21 for handgun.
Of course a portion of their employees are gun illiterate enough to ask for ID before the computer, then the computer prompts them to put that in so it can verify age.
Since as long as I can remember, for calibers that can be used for both.

Good point. He must have insider info!
You don't think someone might tell the clerk that they were buying it for a rifle and then put in a pistol, would they? [panic]
They've asked me before. You know...back when they had ammo.

The cash register prompts the question. If someone not familiar with the age requirements for ammo was helping you, they just followed the age question prompts from the register. Seriously, of all things to get your panties in a twist about, this falls somewhere around the CO weatherman being wrong in his forecast area.

This. They always ask me.

I may have been asked the rifle or pistol question.. never really concerned me .. gotta show the ID either way .. and I'm way over the age or either so whats the diff?
and even in the "ghetto" wally world I go to .. no one seems to freak out at ammo. hell last time I bout a couple hundred rounds between shotgun, 45 and 223 all the counter lady said was " wow looks like your gunna have fun this weekend" ( I also had other obvious camping supplies I was picking up )
I'm just so happy when I buy ammo at good prices, unless they ask for my SSN, I'm giddy and OK with an extra few seconds during checkout.

I think it is a little insensitive of you to use this analogy this close to a Saturday FRIDPA match.
Also, when asked, "Rifle or pistol?" do NOT reply, "Actually, it's for a pipe bomb."
I would have asked for a finger print cause you look like a sureno gang member. Security was watching you the whole time.

You know its going to snow/rain like mother nature is having a vaginal crisis resulting in a temper tantrum this Saturday. It's just normal for the IDPA match. Then Hoser will post it's cancelled due to weather. Then I'll respond with my "shocked" face. This has all played out before.
This has all played out before.
I've seen you post exactly that at least three times now.

I can't think of a time that I've bought ammo at Wal-Mart that I haven't been asked that.

Strange, I've never been asked for an ID and weather it is for a rifle or handgun the times that I bought ammo at Wally Worlds, pre panic times though. Guess I really look like an Older Fart than I actually am.........

Yeah I think some people didn't read this correctly a few did.. And I see what you are saying SA... I get the computer prompting it.. I just thought it was funny that I'm well over 21 she looks at my ID sees I'm 21 then asks me if its for rifle or handgun... I was just wondering if the government had them asking even more questions.. With everything changing I just figured it was possible...
and yes I found 22lr and bought the last 3 boxes.. I was surprised as well...She asked how many I wanted and I wanted to say all of them but she looked stressed enough so I said 3. The other 2 boxes were for the guy who just bought a 22 anyway.. That is actually the only ammo she got in today and when I first asked it was on the counter.. She didn't even bother putting it in the display so it pays to ask

She's asking for ID because she's told to. And she's asking whether handgun or rifle to decide if you have to be 21 or not. And because its Walmart, she does not figure out that if your ID says over 21 that the second question is moot.
as far as I know they only ask suspicious people and record their information. hopefully you didn't pay with a card and show and ID.
Doing it for ever. When I was 19 the would'nt sell me 22LR because it 'might' be used in a pistol. I mentioned that the LR meant long rifle. Still no.

Haha crap.... What do I do now? Sell it?

best thing to do is give it to me. I will take it and use it for lawful purposes. I will need a bill of sale, copy of drivers license, copy of SS card and birth certificate as well. I'll take that info to their headquarters in Arkansas and let them know you are now relieved of the ammo and you should be taken off the list...that of course requires a $125 fee, so I'll need that in the form of cash.

Man that's a big stress relief for a small amount of money and some evil bullets... :-) very kind of you!

This. And the computer asks the questions, and they can't proceed to complete the sale until they get an answer. It's usually for 22LR and it doesn't matter how old you look. The computer asks.
No sane person needs 3 boxes of .22 LR..... [panic]

The guy at Walmart yesterday told me that the Adams County Sheriff Department is completely out of 9mm ammo. First thought is "they carry 9mm"? I figured it would be .40 or .45, then I asked him "so the whole sheriff's department is out on patrol with empty guns"
I'm not buying it,,,,

As already mentioned, it depends on the caliber. I've been known to answer neither, it's for my machinegun! Get's some interesting reactions to say the least.
I would just tell them I don't even own any firearms. I'm just buying it to resell on Armslist for a profit.

Was picking up some ammo in Fountain and over course those of us who were buying ammo had to have it carried up to the front registers because it was so early.
The lady in front of me was buying some .22LR and was asked if she was buying this to put it into a rifle or a handgun. She did not know what to say so I assumed she was buying it for her husband. I told "Say RIFLE every time". She did and then the cashier resumed the transaction. She was confused so I explained about the age for buying ammo. 18 and 21 and that you can use .22 in rifles and handguns etc. So now the CASHIER knows why.
Stupid if you ask me.
jokes on them though, I bought 7.62x39 for my........DRACO PISTOL and I told them Rifle........stickin it to the man!!!!! Hahahahaa
