ITunes is a virus! Always has been.
Media Monkey on my server to manage files, fix tags, etc. Stream Logitech Media Server to Squeezebox Touch or Squeeze Player on android around the house, and uploaded everything to Google Play for cloud based mobile playback. My phone has more than enough local storage for music on the go.
If I was doing more streaming than high end source listening, streaming video, whole house, etc. I would probably use Plex.
Fuck iTunes.

I'm not a Windows phone user and I still use this software. It's pretty awesome.

I use iTunes to keep my junk organized and Subsonic to stream it to anywhere I damn well please without Google looking at it. I've also got it it backed up on my server.
I've thought about trying Media Monkey to manage it but haven't gotten around to it.
I use a program call Banshee to manage @ 20GB of music - it is available for Linux, Mac and Windows. Google it up and try it out.

The radio.
I use Winamp... it's free, does everything I-tunes does, and doesn't have the "Apple or nothing" flavor that I-tunes does.

I remember when ITunes used to take like 30 seconds to start up. Now I swear it takes 15 minutes to open, send playlist data, compile genius results etc. I just the damn thing to open so I can play music!

I used to just manage it manually with a hierarchical file structure and played via WinAmp but then I finally picked up an iPod (vs generic MP3 player) and had to migrate to iTunes anyway so now my 10k songs are all on iTunes.

I thought I was the only person who still owned/uses a Zune. I use mine all of the time but still can't figure out how to get .wmv (yeah, Windows media) files to load on it.

I have a Zune! love it.. I really only use the zune software to transfer files back and forth from it occasionally. I have a SONOS system in my home so all of my playback of the files on my computer is via SONOS.

I have a Zune HD. Can't say I use it much after getting a smart phone.

What is this "smart phone" you speak of?
You kids and your fancy gadgets.

1 on Banshee. Check it out here. (http://banshee.fm/)
I used to use Rythmbox (http://projects.gnome.org/rhythmbox/) but recently switched to Banshee.
At this point the only downside to switching away from iTunes is if you use the iTunes store.
I still buy CDs and rip music to the library. Again this is a "large" database of music. I'd like something to organize playlist, sync devices and manage tags etc.

amazon cloud player
99 cents for a song, NOT 1.29
If I die, my computer has my MP3's not Apple
If I want to play an MP3 I own on Itunes, I just convert it - BUT I retain my old ownership.

One day in October 2006, i decided to convert all of my CDs (about 5k of them....Only good stuff: Techno, dance music from 90-95!) and choose iTunes. Took me a month of almost 24/7 work (I was unemployed and it kept me busy). Never had a problem with it. Never looked back. Upgraded from PC to Mac, downgraded to PC and went back to MAC...
Currently running a 73.295 title music library.

Pretty easy actually. I store all of my stuff on my computer and refuse to buy Apple products.

Nothing. iPod nano, using rebuild_db. I copy songs to it, run rebuild_db, rock on.
iTunes required on some devices, but I let the kids screw with that crap.
