Not sure why they are calling this a tragedy. Stupidity is more appropriate.

I feel sorry for the engineer. That's got to be some heavy baggage to take home at the end of the day.

A teen has died playing chicken with trains on Thursday, in what appears to be a tragic yet unnecessary accident. The 15 year old, Austin Price, was reportedly playing on the train tracks with two friends in Alameda County. They were apparently playing chicken with trains, standing on the tracks until the trains were close and then jumping out the way at the last minute.

However, the Hayward youth (http://www.christianpost.com/topics/youth/) mistimed his escape when one northbound Capitol Corridor train came down the tracks, and he was struck by the train at about 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The student community at San Lorenzo High School has been shocked by his tragic death, and have commented that he will be remembered as a kind, caring and sweet boy who always put others before himself.

Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy, April Luckett, has explained that the other two teenagers were unhurt in the accident.

The local community has reported that many students from the San Lorenzo School as well as many in the local community walk near the train tracks, and it is not uncommon for the children to hang out near them. Although some have expressed concerns that it was a tragedy waiting to happen, no action had been taken yet, and now it appears it is too late for the 15 year old victim.

School Principal Tovi Scruggs has said, "It's an ongoing concern. Tragedies don't happen frequently, but we know the tracks are not staying empty," according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

Another student at the school has also explained that students play chicken "all the time" on the train tracks.
Grief counselors have attended the school to help students struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

Dumbass. More chlorine is needed in the gene pool. I've always held that stupidity should hurt. In this case it actually did - for a few seconds for the dumb kid and a lifetime for the innocent train crew.

Trains are dangerous. BAN TRAINS NOW!

He could have grown up to be a serial killer, rapist, televangelist, or any number of bad things. This event has significantly protected society from any of those potential ills.

The rail company will pay out millions when it is learned the train was going 4mph faster compared to the other 48 times the dead teen "won" the game of chicken. The teen would still be alive if the train would have followed rail company standard operating procedures and been going the correct speed.

The train company should preemptively sue the family of previously discussed moron for inflicting emotional suffering on the engineer. And make the amount sought to be so significant as to quell any absurd ambulance-chasers from going after the train company in the first place.

Actually the RR could sue for damages to the train because the tracks are on private property and it is marked no trespassing.

Choo-choo's ain't nothing to fuck around with. And slamming on the brakes into an emergency stop can cause a lot of expensive damage. For one, flat spots on every wheel on the train. Those will likely have to be fixed or replaced. Big $$$$$.

100-150lb Teenager vs 5,000 Ton train... I like those odds.

We need more regulation!!! It's not enough that trespassing on the tracks is illegal. We need a specific law that playing chicken with trains is illegal. We also need background checks on anyone that comes within 100ft of any train. We also need to ban high capacity trains. Most weigh between 3000-8000 tons, but some can weigh up to 13,000 tons. Who needs to transport 13,000 tons of goods? The limit should be 1000 tons. If it only saves one life, we need to do this!!!!

We need a immediate ban on trains that have 15 or more cars. Think of the children.

I have a list of people that I would like to see play on the train tracks.

I played on the train tracks all the time as a kid. When we heard the tracks start to squeal we got the hell off. Hell, we used to jump off the railroad bridge into the river. If I did that as a kid today, my parents would probably be arrested for child neglect.

I work for RTD, seen plenty of video regarding people being dumb around trains. Actually was on a lightrail train a couple of years ago when it impacted a guy passed out in the right-of-way on the Alameda fly-over. Damn lightrail can stop pretty fast when they max-brake. Regardless, it is almost always a fatality when it's a train vs. pedestrian. I used to work with a guy who would say: "Ya know why I've never been hit by a train?...Because I don't stand on the damn tracks." Pretty simply solution. However, if you want to play stupid games, you will be awarded with stupid prizes.

I feel for everyone involved- the kid included. Teens DO play stupid games like chicken (YouTube is full of vids involving Dumb teenage Tricks) and they don't really consider the consequences, because everyone at that age is pretty immortal in their mind. Doesn't anybody remember their mindset as a teen?

It's a sad thing, all around.

His parents must be going through hell right now.

Lost a 15yr old family friend to something similar, riding a bicycle playing chicken on a dark highway.

The rest of the story for the family doesn't get any better.

I've always held that stupidity should hurt.Actually, it always does hurt. Unfortunately, it's usually those that come into contact with the afflicted that have the pain and not the carriers.

In this case, there was a culling of the herd.
