I've got to say, it's definitely a very scary feeling to read the news and have your heart suddenly drop thinking a family member is there. My dad has run the Boston marathon for the past 4 years, and is still running marathons in the city he lives in. He often goes on trips without telling me, so my heart instantly sank while I frantically called him. I'm just now hearing about it because I'm on a work shift and was sleeping all day. Turns out, he didn't go this year but didn't really have a reason why not.

The last time I woke up to news like this was Sandy Hook and I couldn't believe it then.

Legally it will be OK to have video files stored, because the courts say you have "no expectation to privacy" out in public places. Runners getting set to take part in the Boston Marathon were warned beforehand that they were going to die, said a Squamish resident who took part in the race.

Mike Heiliger, 59, said a woman holding several bags was telling runners who were picking up their pre-race packages in downtown Boston on Saturday (April 13) that they were going to die if they participated in the event.

“I was downtown on Saturday and you know, you see these people on the street and think it's just some nutbar,” he told The Chief from his Boston hotel on Monday (April 15). “It was a little creepy because you can identify who the runners are and I heard her say to this runner two feet away from me that, 'If you run tomorrow you're going to die.'”

Heiliger said he thought about telling the woman that the race was Monday, but decided not to correct her.

Heiliger was in the process of calling the police after his conversation with The Chief.

“I thought it was just a nut and maybe she was a nut but she was holding a couple of bags like she just got off a plane and was accosting runners on Saturday,” he said.

The Squamish resident was one of a group of about 15 runners from the North Shore and he said they're all fine.

“We all run in a run club and as far as I know all of our people are OK,” he said. “Some of them didn't get to finish, unfortunately, because when the bomb went off — that was it. They [race officials] stopped everybody.”

Heiliger finished the race in 3:29:51 and was making his way back to his hotel when the explosions went off.

“I was just coming to the hotel and I heard all these sirens,” he said. “But you're in a big city and when you hear sirens you think nothing of it.”

It was the fourth time Heiliger had raced in Boston and said the scene was disturbing.

“I'm just stunned right now,” he said. “It's a terrible situation. Boston has really embraced this race, they really get up for this thing and they're so friendly. For something like this to happen it's mind boggling.”

He said whoever set up the explosions had put some thought into it.

“Whoever did this knew what they were doing,” he said. “They knew where to put where the most people were.”

Despite the disastrous day, Heiliger said the tragedy will not dampen his enthusiasm for the race.

“I think I would still come back to Boston,” he said. “I bet security will be insane from here on in but I take the attitude that if you stay away, you let the crazies win. Time will tell what comes of this. This is huge. They [locals] want to hang someone out on the streets.”

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The explosives used in the deadly Boston Marathon bombing were contained in 6-liter pressure cookers and hidden in black duffel bags on the ground, a person briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
One of the explosives contained shards of metal and ball bearings, and another contained nails, the person said.
A second person briefed on the investigation confirmed that at least one of the explosives was made out of a pressure cooker. Both spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
Two bombs blew up seconds apart Monday at the finish line of one of the world's most storied races, tearing off victims' limbs and leaving the streets spattered with blood and strewn with broken glass. Three people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy, and more than 170 were wounded.
President Barack Obama said called the explosions a terrorist attack and said law enforcement and intelligence officials were trying to determine who was responsible. No one has claimed responsibility for the bombings.
These types of pressure cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 joint FBI and Homeland Security intelligence report. One of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the intelligence report said.
"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said.
The Pakistani Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the 2010 attempt in Times Square, has denied any role in the Boston Marathon attack.
Law enforcement has not yet determined what was used to set off the explosives. Typically, these bombs have an initiator, switch and explosive charge, according to a 2004 warning from the Homeland Security Department about these types of explosives.
"We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this despicable crime, and we will do everything we can to bring them to justice," said Richard DesLauriers, FBI agent in charge in Boston.
Investigators in Boston are combing surveillance tapes and pictures from Monday.

For all of the heroism (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/the-upbeat/deadly-boston-blasts-inspire-heroism-001418539.html) shown in the wake of Monday's Boston Marathon bombings, at least one scene was, at best, an example of unfortunate timing and, at worst, a despicable display of greed.

Video footage purportedly shot in the moments after the two blasts shows people taking official marathon jackets from a tent vacated by race staffers.

"Looters stealing marathon jackets," a YouTube user who posted the footage wrote (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hM7Ura6Q4w), "while others are just feet away critically injured."
It's unclear if those seen picking up the jackets, meant for finishers of the race, were aware of what had transpired minutes earlier.
It is clear, however, that some people took more than one.

The video was posted to Reddit.com (http://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1cfgcw/post_boston_marathon_bombing_looters_stealing), where users debated the footage and threatened to shame those in it.
"Take a high quality screenshot of each and every one of their faces," one user wrote. "Make a Tumblr. Plaster each persons face online. Get Reddit to front page it and make it go viral."

Hits closer to home when you hear stuff like this. It's one thing to read the headline 'At least 176 injured' and it's quite another to hear how horribly just two of these people actually are injured. Makes me wonder (and thankful it wasn't) how high the death toll would have been had there not been so many emergency personnel on the scene so quickly. Kind of brings some reality to how horrific this attack was. Is this by chance relation to the little boy that was killed? The story I've heard was that the 8 year old boy went to hug his father who had just finished the race. He then returned to the crowd where his mother and sisters were just before the explosion that claimed his life and left his sister and mother injured. What a horrible story and my thoughts are with ALL of those affected by this senseless violence.

when the two guys are standing their in one picture with their backs to the camera, look at the guy in the middle. he has a radio mic on his chest and maybe what looks to be an emergency responders back on the left side and a radio pouch hanging on his right side.

by the way none of these are time stamped. that one picture you see of the black bag on the scissor lift then they say it is gone, look way down at the bottom of the photo album to see those three pictures taken through the window. the first two show the scene after the blast (they are blurry) the last one shows at some time before the blast and the bag is still there

All the various media wonks are pushing and shoving, all clamoring for the glory of being the first to "get the scoop", so I figure we can expect a lot of disinformation for a long time. You could stop a reporter on the street and tell him something totally false, and it'll be on the way to the public as fast as he can get it out. Accuracy doesn't count as much as getting the scoop.

I just hope nobody else dies or loses any limbs, and I hope to God the bombs weren't made with gunpowder! If they were, we can kiss our reloading supplies goodbye forever.
