We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Read that again.
I'm sure you've all heard this before. These are the words of the start of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence. Take note that our Founders acknowledge that mankind has certain Rights that are neither given by man nor granted by government - these are given to us by God, our Creator and are not to be denied by anyone.
The Founding Fathers later went on to give us the Constitution of the United States. They then added in what we've come to call the "Bill of Rights", the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution which spell out many of the "unalienable Rights". Again, these Rights are not granted by any government, they come from God alone. The Rights were identified not to grant permission but to restrict government from usurping these Rights.
The repeated and continued actions against the Second Amendment ("A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed") are a perfect example of the arrogant disregard for our Rights that our government demonstrates.
"shall not be infringed" seems pretty clear-cut and obvious doesn't it? Yet, under the names of "safety" or "public benefit", governments at the national, state, and local levels continue to infringe upon this basic Right. Why do you suppose they do these things? Is it really about safety, or is it something more ominous?
Some would have you believe that the Second Amendment is about hunting, or even self-defense. While these are added benefits, the Founding Fathers knew (through their own experience) that the citizens needed a guarantee to be able to protect themselves from an oppressive government. They realized that guaranteeing a citizens Right to Arms was the only way to accomplish this. Citizens can only protect our Rights, ALL OF THEM, if we have the means to stand up to an oppressive government.
Effective August 1, 2026, Colorado SB25-003 bans the purchase, sale, and transfer of specific semiautomatic firearms (defined as rifles/shotguns with detachable magazines or gas-operated handguns) unless the buyer completes a state-approved safety course, passes a background check, and obtains a permit. You read that correctly, on August 1st, citizens will need to ask for government PERMISSION to exercise their Right. Citizens will be required to complete a 12 hour state-approved safety course, with written and shooting tests, (oh, but just 4 hours for those who already have a state-approved hunting license) safety course to receive a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card (FSCEC) before purchasing certain weapons. The state mandated content is still being developed so most "approved" training providers haven't identified what they'll charge for this training, but this training course will cost the individual (estimates are the training will cost at least $100). The process requires applying to a local sheriff for an eligibility card, which includes a background check (fingerprinting as well) which will also have a fee. The process to obtain the FSCEC is above and beyond the state required background check (yes, 2 background checks) to purchase/transfer a firearm - with it's own fee. Oh, and you must go through the background check and training course EVERY 5 YEARS.
Any "Right" that requires government permission and any Right delayed by government bureaucracy, is no longer a Right, it is a privilege granted only to those the government decides are worthy. While this law only applies to Colorado, don't be misled into believing that the same effort isn't being made all over the United States.
The repeated infringements on this Right aren't about "safety" as they only effect the law-abiding. Legislation keeps rolling out that gives more and more leniency to criminals, yet restricts those who'd follow the law. This is by design. If your goal is to control the People and eliminate their Rights, you can't accomplish this while the People maintain an ability to resist.
