That year series of El Caminos were based on the Malibu chassis, so your options for rear end parts are opened up, don't just. Ask for "El Camino" parts or you will get charged a premium for them.
And tell your kid to quit drifting around corners...........[ROFL1]
Are you sure it is a 8.5", i am pretty sure 1978+ used a 7.5". If it is an 8.5" your search got a little harder.
Pull n Save or You Pull and Pay I forget which.
They have an up to date inventory on their website plus you can cross reference it.
Good luck. Seems like most of the salvage yards are scrapping cars that are more than ten years old. I had a hard time funding parts for the daughter's 1996 Buick because it was "too old".
Might try posting a wanted ad on craigslist. I've had success doing that several times.

After doing a little searching i think your looking for the axle out of a Buick Grand National or Regal Turbo. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ms...FY1AMgodRFwADw
Depends on the axle you have. My 78 GMC version elky had a Buick or Pontiac axle. talk to a guy with a Hollander.
