New member from IL
Hi. New member from Illinois. Just wanted to say hi. I have some questions about advice on getting my first AR. My budget is $1100 max.
1. Carbine or mid length
I've read mid length is better for longevity, and possibly for reliability.
2. Some brands I'm considering...... for a carbine I've considered a.Colt LE6920 or LE6920 w/ Magpul furniture.
b. FNH USA. FN 15 carbine or FN 15 tactical carbine.
c. Sid M400 or M400 enhanced
3. For mid -length, I've considered
a. Smith & Wesson M&P15 MOE Mid Magpul
b. Rock River Arms LAR 15 Operator II Elite
c. Ruger AR556
I know most carbines have a 1/7 twist rate. Also some other AR's use a 1/9. I was thinking a 1/8 would be a decent compromise, or is this a non-issue? Also other options A2 front sight w/ BUIS vs. straight optics? I do know I'd like a direct gas impigement vs. a piston version. collapsible stock, and am curious of which brands to avoid..... ie Stag, Core15, Delton. I've never heard of them, so I have no idea of their quality, reliability, and future resale if that ever becomes a option in the future. Thank you in advance.

Please if at all possible include a link with info regarding your recommendation. I'd like to read / learn as much as I could before I decide to buy.

Howdy friend. Welcome. Lotsa questions there. Many of the answers really fall to personal preference and opinion. Plenty of the answers are still debatable. Start by surfing the older posts and stick around a while.

Welcome!
Many opinions here and most are worth exactly what you pay for them. I normally suggest you build your lower. You get the benefit of knowing how to maintain and swap out parts on the fire control group. You also get exactly what you choose and you can easily make changes later down the road. For a first upper, my preference is Bravo Company and I like mid-length gas on a 16" barrel. Twist rate has more to do with the bullets you plan on shooting. 1 in 8 is a good compromise and you will be able to shoot almost anything with that twist rate.
Remember to budget for your sights/optics, magazines and ammunition. Over the life of your rifle, you will spend more money on ammunition than any other part of the rifle. At least with good optics you can reuse the glass on something else.
Decide how you will be using the rifle and then look for suggestions here as well as all over the Internet.
Be safe.

Welcome, join the fray.
Before you get the first one you will start planning your second one. They multiply and could even be addictive.

Howdy,
Your choices and wants all depend on your local laws toward the Evil Black Rifle, seeings how you are just west of the safest city in the country, IE Chicago, with all of their anti EBR laws.

Welcome to the group. Recommend you spend some time reading some the great information here in the previous postings before buying anything. Lots of good info here and it may prevent some buyers remorse later when you do figure out what you want vice what you can afford.
Good luck and most importantly, have fun.
