Wow, that was powerful and sad. That has to one of the hardest and hated jobs. I've done a few death notifications and the responses go from one end of the spectrum to the other. You never get used to it and having to do it as an assignment would be unimaginable.
That's a helluva read to start the day. Next time I decide my job sucks I think I'll stop and remember that story...then get back to work happy about what I'm doing. Thanks for posting, AS.
Damn allergies !!!
God Bless our service members.
I sure don't envy the person doing the job of notification.
I did funeral detail out of Ft.Riley when I was stationed there, from carrying the casket, if the family so wanted, to folding the flag and firing the volleys. The Staff Sgt. Always gave the flag and fired cases tucked in it to the family member.
All the funerals we did were WWII vets and one WWI vet. At least they all past from age related causes.
God bless all our troops, past, present and future.
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13
Burial at sea was one of the hardest evolutions we had to do.
I was very young at the time and didn't have sense enough to consider it an honor, I am sorry to say.
