I would like to attach a slant muzzle brake to an AK I recently picked up (it currently has no muzzle brake attached.) Anyone have any recommendations of Colo Springs area smiths that can either thread my barrel, or attach the brake with some other means (spot welding?) Thanks for any help.
I don't know any smiths in that area but the threads are 14X1 LEFT hand threads. Get a die in that size and do it yourself. Not sure of the size but a quick internet search will turn something up.
Your front sight probably doesn't have the retaining pin that holds the muzzle brake on so you can either change out the front sight or hand fit the muzzle brake untill you can tighten it down in the proper position.
Now that I think of it you could get a muzzle brake and drill out the treads on it and slip it on and weld it on. Shouldn't be that hard. It's just a pain in the ass if you ever want to change it out with something different.

If you have a turned down barrel (Norinco for instance) your external diameter should be JUST under 1/2 inch, usually about .498+/-.
If this is true, your best bet is to thread it for 1/2-28 and use an AR style brake thats reamed out to accommodate 7.62. Bear in mind that if your AK is a ban model, in order to add a flash hider or other muzzle device, you'll need to be 922(r) compliant.
