BOULDER, Colo. — A 57-year-old Coal Creek Canyon resident died Tuesday night after apparently shooting himself in the head while disassembling an assault rifle, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's deputies, fire crews, paramedics and a rescue helicopter were dispatched to 25 Crescent Lake Road in Coal Creek Canyon at about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday on a report of an accidental shooting.
Upon arrival, they found the man, who has not been identified, in his garage/workshop with a bullet wound to the head. The victim was airlifted to a Denver-area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sheriff's officials, in a news release Wednesday morning, said "preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was disassembling an assault-type rifle and the rifle discharged, striking him in the head."
"It appears he was dissembling it and he either dropped the rifle or hit it on something," Sgt. Rick Brough said.
At the time of the shooting, the victim was alone in the garage, and his wife was inside the house. Sheriff's officials said there were no indications of foul play.
"It's just a very sad situation," Brough said.
The Boulder County Coroner's Office will rule on the cause and manner of death following its investigation.
The Boulder County Assessor’s Office lists the owners of the home as Gary L. and Carol A. David.
A woman who answered the phone at the home Tuesday night referred questions to a victim advocate, who said the family had no comment.

Crap.
What a tragedy.
You must always check the chamber. If you leave your workspace and come back then check the chamber again.
I never want to be a statistic.

Still breathing. I check too many times for loaded ammo, the wife thinks I'm crazy. Best wishes to the family who have been affected by this accident.
