The second trial is scheduled to begin next month. Everyone in Baltimore knows that. SRB, the current mayor, has no political future in Baltimore. She knows that.
The real story, IMO, is the next twenty years in Baltimore. The Baltimore Police Department has been gutted, demoralized, and stripped of the personnel it would need to improve and serve the people of the city. Regardless of what happens to the six officers involved in this one tragic incident, the 750,000 people who live in the city will not have an effective police department for the next generation. This is on top of a corrupt school board, defective social services system, and dwindling tax base. While there are plenty who will have no empathy for the people of Baltimore, I hope there are some who will recognize that what has happened there could just as easily happen anywhere.
As Americans, when one of us suffers, we all should pay attention because the next one to suffer may just be us.
