Some of this nonsense comes from all the damn CSI TV shows that have conditioned Americans to think that forensics is "science". Its largely not. Realize that even something as accepted as finger print analysis has no rigorous scientific study supporting its accuracy/reliability.
Also, there is no agency in this country whose reputation so greatly exceeds its actual competence like the FBI.
