Contemplating building an Upper in this cartridge for my AR 308. I know that 6.5 Creedmoore is a more popular cartridge and for barrel availability. This is also an option. I have heard that the Lapua gives a little longer barrel life than the Creedmoore, but I don't think I'll shoot either one out. Any thoughts or opinions on this? Thanks.
Ballistic between the two are close enough to the same and the 260 Remington with better barrel life.
Here would be my determining factory- barrel expectancy and if I want to buy ammo vs reloading.
If I plan to shoot under 1500 rounds out of the rifle I'd just get a 260 Remington. If I didn't reload and had to use factory loads the Creedmore gets the nod. If you handload the x47 is more versatile and will fit longer bullets at mag length given that extra millimeter of case length over the Creedmore.
As always can take my opinion and trash it or ponder. After all it will be your choice.
I reload and enjoy the challenge of finding accurate loads. I do like the fact that you can use longer VLD bullets that will still fit in the mag.
For a gas gun build a 6.5 Creed. Much more compatable with AR-10 mags.
Gas guns are really hard on brass. 6.5 Lapua brass is around a buck each.
No matter what caliber you build it in, try to stick with bullets under 130 gns. The longer ones take up too much space in the case that you need for powder.
I considered the 6x47 or the 6.5x47 on one of my large frame builds. One of the biggest reasons that I chose to stay with a 6.5 Creedmoor is the availability of cheap brass. Auto-loaders can be hard on brass and I couldn't justify the potential of ruining expensive brass long before its service life was up.
The .260 would be the cheapest as you can form brass from .308 brass.
