I hope the kid is OK and not permanently disfigured in the face. Regardless of organizational "policies", I will never camp in a tent without appropriate last ditch safety equipment.

I don't understand why firearms are not mentioned when the procedures state "If escape is not possible, try to fight back using any object available". Take that back, I know the answer.

We had a particularly stubborn bear trying to get into my bird shed 2 weeks ago. It took me shooting it several times with the bb gun to get it to walk off. Usually they take off as soon as they see me. This guy was NOT afraid. Kinda freaked me out a little. The ones that are not afraid of humans are the ones to look out for, bigtime.

We have been fortunate the our local bears have tended to stay away from the immediate house area, but do make an almost daily drive-by of the locking trash container and trash drums. One bear even stole our rolling trash container, leaving it in the ravine a few 100 ft away, still locked. One 12 ga single-shot is always available for immediate use, with a full range of rubber buck, rubber baton, 000 buck and Brenneke slugs on the sling bandolier.

My boss always says how black bears are more afraid of you, I told him I don't want to come across the one that's not. I don't hike without carrying my ccw or the 10mm.

Some pretty gnarly pics of the wounds on the news tonight. The kid, the camp's wilderness survival instructor, seems pretty put together. Remember, eventually the Millennials will be replaced with the new up and comers.

A few staples isn't too bad, compared to what it could have been. I don't think he will forget this encounter.

One came by and took one of the hummingbird feeders down. I raised it up so "hopefully" he can't reach it again.

The attack happened at 4:15 a.m. and I heard about it early this morning. It was a couple miles from our home. It is a reminder to always have and use a good flashlight when out at night, to remain aware and to be prepared for an encounter.

We have a serious problem with bears, thanks in part to the initiative adopted in the state constitution that limits bear management by prohibiting hunting in spring, with bait, and with dogs. It was a law promoted by big money, out of state animal rights groups, and supported by our leftist news media. Clueless urbanites who have nothing to risk or lose.

We go to great lengths to prevent bear problems but have used rubber buckshot on four occasions this spring to haze problem bears. I admire bears and I don't want to hurt one, but I sure don't want one pushing it's way into our home to harm us or kill our pets.

Well, shit. I guess I should get some rubber buckshot. I never bought it before.

I find that I'm able to get off one and sometimes two rounds before the bear runs out range. You want to hit them in the hind quarters, and the pellets that hit will drop off right there. Now I'm loading one rubber buckshot, two double ball rounds for extended range, then an OO buck and two magnum slugs in case the bear runs the wrong direction.
