I'm a hard core Smith guy (and have been for 50 years lol) but this model of Ruger really appeals to me, especially considering what older 3" Smiths sell for. Anyone have any experience with one, especially if the action is better than a standard GP100? Never been a fan of Ruger actions nor do I have any experience with any that have been smithed. Thanks.
The older 3" S&Ws are hard to beat, so I understand your conundrum.
I have three GP100’s; including a GP100 match champion. If there is a difference in the action, I can’t tell. I was pretty disappointed as I figured the Match Champion would be tuned up a bit. They are by far still one of my favorite guns to shoot but I wouldn’t expect the Clapp version to be any different. I too have always wanted one and may add it to the collection one day.
Thanks folks. I’m going to pass on it, there a good deal on a Colt AR I’ll pursue if I can get through the home projects for less than expected.
Don’t get me wrong, they are a freaking blast to shoot and are built like tanks. One day I’ll have one to round out the collection but then again, I’ve never shoot a smith wheel gun aside from bodyguards and j-frames.
I have a strong bias towards and preference for older S&W wheelguns. Mine have incredible actions, only one has been smithed (my late dad’s 1981 686).
The prices on the 3” K frames have been high for awhile, don’t see that changing. Many have proposed the K with a round butt and 3” is the ideal self defense revolver. The Ruger is a very strong, well built gun but I’ve never been impressed with the double action of those I’ve shot.
The Wiley Clapp GP100 is set up very nice but if the action is run of the mill Ruger than it’s not for me.
