Given the likely election outcome wouldn't this be an opportune time for Clarence Thomas to announce his retirement? It's well known that Thomas has considered retirement and doing so now would give Trump one last winning victory on his way out. A fourth Supreme Court appointment and a big fat noogie to the opposition. Can DJT now muster the wherewithal and long term focus to see through such a legacy appointment?
That would be nice - help secure the Court for far longer. My only concern is with this Covid crap escalating, what if a few senators were out on quarantine, sick, or hospitalized?
It would be nice if he could change his mind....
Thomas would not risk retiring now. 3 month is very tight window. It is doable but still too risky.
He now had to wait either 4.5 years or 8.5 years depending outcome of 24' or 28' elections. :)
I think that move would be dicey at this time. While the MSM tried to conflate things, replacing a dead Justice during an election year when the President has already gotten advise from the Senate is entirely different from a lame duck President trying to replace a dead Justice while ignoring or not seeking the advise of the Senate which is also entirely different from a possibly lame duck President and possibly lame duck Senate seeking to replace a voluntarily retiring Justice.
Thomas is the one that has been itching for a 2A fight, why would he quit when he knows one is on the near horizon?
Won't matter. Dems are going to pack the court next year anyway (especially if they steal the Senate too).
In fact I wouldn't be surprised if all of Trumps judicial appointments (including SCOTUS) will be impeached and removed (and will be lucky if they can practice law afterward).
