ANNOUNCEMENT DECEMBER 10, 2021
It is with deep sadness, we announce the passing of Mesa County Sheriff Sergeant Wayne Weyler. Sgt. Weyler lost his battle to COVID-19 this morning. He was 64.
Sgt. Weyler served his community as a law enforcement officer for 41 years, first with the Adams County Sheriff?s Office, then joined the Mesa County Sheriff?s Office in 1996.
His tenure included the investigation and the successful prosecution of many notable homicide cases in Mesa County, as well as leading the agency?s Peer Support program. Most recently, Sgt. Weyler helped pioneer the Mesa County Sheriff?s Office Crime Reduction Unit and led the Complex Crimes Unit.
?Wayne gave so much of himself to serve his fellow man. He was a leader, mentor, and genuinely nice human being. Words can?t express how much he will be missed,? said Sheriff Todd Rowell. ?Please join us in honoring his memory and sending your thoughts and prayers to his family.?
The agency would like to thank our law enforcement partners and the community for supporting us as we mourn the loss of one of our own. Sgt. Weyler?s family has asked for privacy at this time. Thank you
I met Sergeant Weyler a few times about 20 years ago and later when I was an MCSO Volunteer. He was a fine fellow, uncharacteristically warm for a LEO, I thought. About 2 weeks ago I happened to leave a message on his phone hoping to talk about some images of unknown people, potential burglars, I caught on camera prowling around my Mesa County home. I didn't get a return call but was unaware that he was battling Covid-19 at the time. So very sad for his family and all who were close to Mesa County Sheriff Detective Sergeant Wayne Weyler. My sincere condolences.
