"Polis said he wants to reduce the unemployment insurance and the paid family and medical leave premiums, and make it free for Coloradans to start a business. He also wants to reduce vehicle registration fees and prevent increases in driver's license fees."

What could possibly go wrong?

DENVER ? Starting on Jan. 1, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles will implement a new law that will establish a state license plate replacement program that will raise registration costs.

Under the new License Plate Expiration or Change of Ownership Act, license plates from Class C motor vehicles ? which includes passenger vehicles, motorhomes and motorcycles ? will expire upon transfer of the owner?s title or interest in the vehicle.

Owners can retain the same combination of letters or numbers from the expired plates when registering for a new vehicle, but they?ll have to apply for personalized plates that will then be mailed to the vehicle?s owner.

The state says the new law will improve safety for first responders and motorists because it will ensure that drivers have reflective and legible license plates. It will mean first responders can more easily identify plates and drivers will be able to see the highly reflective plates if a vehicle is stalled on the side of the road in the dark.

The additional replacement expense will be $4.73 for most Coloradans, the state said. If drivers want to keep their configuration on their current plate, they will need to pay a one-time replacement fee ranging between $68.06 and $118.06 in addition to the normally collected registration fees.

It only costs something like $25 to form a business in Colorado, the thing that is crushing me right now is dealing with every sales tax district in the state. I'm a one man shop and anywhere I do business I need to sign up for a city sales tax license for that city then file anywhere from monthly to quarterly whether I sell anything in that city or not. Some cities then charge you a fee every year to keep your license current so for instance in Larkspur I get to pay $75 annually for my license so that I can collect $20 in tax for them. The new forms that the state put together that allow you to file a single form for the cities that have decided to participate in the single form system are so confusing that even the people at the state office can't tell you how to fill them out. I'm on the verge of having to pay Avalara to file sales tax for me because I simply can't spend days every month dealing with it. Fun spending your own money to collect a tax for the state.

Wait, so if I sell my car and buy another one and just renewed my plates a month prior I get no credit and, if I have a specialty plate, have to pay those fees AGAIN to get the same specialty plate? Am I misreading this? it has been a long week but... dafuq?!

Just when you thought CO vehicle licensing couldn't get any worse...

I heard horror stories about how much people pay here in WA. When they told me the total for my plates here, they tried to soften the blow. They actually asked me if I wanted to sit down first. That's no joke. I just told them to give me the number so I could write the check. They told me and I just started writing. The gal at the counter was like, "Wow. You didn't get upset at all. Usually people get hostile." I told her, "You don't understand. I just moved here from Colorado. I paid more there."

When they could not raise taxes (Tabor amendment) and started putting all the "fees" on registering vehicles, some friends retired and bought a motor home to travel in. They registered it in Oregon and said it was about a 10th of what it would have been here.
