i was curious if the maroon bells area would be passable at about 12500 feet in a week or so. i was going to do a backpacing trip up there.

I believe if you look up trail information on Google, you'll run across more than one website dedicated to hiking and 4wheel trails that gives information about what conditions one can expect at any given time of the year.
Leave a message that someone took your picinic basket and I bet you'll get a return call in 7 minutes.
Though I'd revive this thread for a similar question I have. Next week I'm planning to be in Aspen on business and would like to go up a day early and do some ATV riding. I looked on traildamage.com, but though a local (or someone with knowledge of the area) might have some good advice.
Anyone know of any ATV trails around Aspen that are good? Nothing too technical.
Thanks.

Camp Hale, Ptarmigan Pass, Shrine, McGalister Gulch are all great easy scenic (Ptarmigan is amazing) routes. McGalister is a bit more technical but it's worth it to be running over the top of the mountains. The view on all these are out of this world, I was just up there Jeepin' a few weeks ago.
Our family has a cabin over in redstone (about 20 minutes from aspen). There is some awsome trails out of the ghost town of Crystal City (LeadKing Basin). I believe that some of the same trails connect from aspen. There is always snow in that area year round. We hunt the snowmass-maroon bells area and find snow above 11k all the time. Good luck and have fun.[Beer]
Ended up going up to Crystal lake (I think that's what it was called, right up by Marble, CO). Was very scenic and would recommend a visit if you get the chance:
