Perhaps, but a majority of the public (that I can imagine) thinks that all AK-47s are fully automatic rifles.

Or its just the reporter adding a bit of drama to an already bad situation and making us gun-owners look even worse.

The wasa my thought as well. I even read it out loud at work and nobody I work with understood why I was having a problem with the statement.

I think it's another firearms demonizing attempt. You know; officially it's something like: Semi-automatic is a form of "automatic", isn't it, so they were just being succinct. When the reality is that they were trying to make it sound like the guy had a fully automatic, cop-killing, baby splattering, granny raping, ultra ballistic over and under with attached sidewinders and tomahawks and electronic countermeasures "assault rifle".
