Firstly, Im not too sure what the difference is between a "varmint" and SPR upper. I think Im looking to spend a max of $600, hopefully much less. Im not sure if that is high or low. Does anyone have info on model1sales.com uppers? I'll continue doing my AR homework, but I was wondering if you guys could help. thanks

J&T sells a pretty good kit, I've got their 24" 1 in 9 twist bull barrel upper with standard BCG, standard free float and a JP low pro upper and it shoots really well. With 52grn Nosler BT's it'll go less than 1/2" at 100yds, with Hornady's 68gr it goes 3/4" at 100yds. They sell a kit for right at $600 that just needs a good trigger and lower.

Most true varmint guns are chambered in .223 as opposed to 5.56. An SPR was originally the MK12. It is a designated marksmen rifle or DM. It would be chambered in 5.56. The SPR has an 18" barrel and carbon fiber handguard.
I have three or four Model 1 uppers, and they work just fine. Model 1 uses E.R. Shaw barrels, which I've found work just as well as a Douglas or other standard production grade barrel. All three of my Varmint uppers (.17 Rem, .204 Ruger, and .223, all heavy barrel) are Model 1. I can shoot one ragged hole at 100 yards with the .223 using a load I developed for it, so it does just fine.
