.223 ak build, or should I stick to another caliber?

Thinking .223, as its accurate, reasonable inexpensive, but mostly just because its very common.

Looking to build a hybrid of sorts, mixing ak47/74 parts, to 1:9 twist .223 barrel. Normal AR-15 mags, and HK sights, or maybe galil. Probably utilizing AK underfolder stock.

Very similar to a galil, but without all the galil specific parts. Machining req'd is not an issue.


Lately, Ive been wondering if Im over thinking and should just do 5.45 instead? Not crazy common, but being a newwer caliber, maybe we'll see more surplus of 5.45 in later years, less 7.62x39, and maybe 5.45 stays less expensive than .223, causing it to become more common? There I go over thinking again! Thoughts?

Make life easy-just get a Norinco or SAR in .223.

I would think the Franken AK would be more trouble than its worth. Playing mix n match is Century's style.

We have 2 SAR-3's Very accurate for an AK and fun to shoot. The reason we have them is years ago 74's were dirt cheap but there was no ammo to be had. If you go the 74 route buy lots of ammo. I have two guns that I do not load for (I can) because I bought lots of surplus when it was cheap.
