Hollow point vs Regular/Ball for semi-auto rifle ammo?

I apologize for not knowing the technical term for things.

I'm curious though, I see a lot of hollow point semi-auto rifle ammunition online, specifically for ak's, and it's almost always cheaper than the regular ammo.

I know for pistols, hollow point/personal defense is always more expensive. What are the reasons hollow point ammo is cheaper for semi-auto rifles? Are there feeding issues? What about the ballistics as far as damage done and penetration for human tissue and buildings/cement/etc?

in my experience with ak ammo the hollow point is stupid, I've shot alot of them and recovered many with no expansion. I honestly don't think I've ever seen one expand properly. Corbon makes some AK ammo that should actually work.

Never had a feeding problem.

The one that comes to mind is thw Wolf 122gr JHP. It steel caseed ammo made in russia. It shoots dirty, but other than that its just fine. For basic target shooting, if it feeds reliably and give you adequate accuracy, it doesn't matter if its JHP or FMJ.

The reason you see hollow point rifle bullets doesn't have to do with expansion like you'd see in a pistol bullet. The idea behind the hollow point rifle bullet is to move the center of gravity a little further back towards the base of the bullet to help stabilize it in flight. That's why most of them are called "match" or "open tip match". This is the same principle you see with the polymer tipped bullets like the A-max. Add a boat tail to the bullet and it flies quite a bit better at long range. What that means in AK ammo I have no idea, as you aren't likely shooting 600 yard competition with it.

If you're after expansion in a rifle bullet, look at soft points.

There shouldn't be any feeding issues. I have no idea why it would be cheaper than fmj.
