I got tired of inkjet cartridges pricing the same as new printers, and I've been using a OCR system to scan in everything, I went with a Brother DCP-8085DN, they're selling for about $320 at Walmart, maybe better prices if you Google further.
Has a 25 sheet ADF, and network capable so I can put documents on the scanner in my office and the girlfriend can scan them directly to her computer. I've had it more than a year without any problems, though I am a fairly low volume print and, after an initial large batch of scans, only do them occasionally as new mail arrives that I need to save.

Ah just noticed that's a Color one you're talking about, which explains the price difference.

Man Dell, Hp, Crapac, They all suck. I would go with a Brother or Cannon. I have had my Multi use cannon for 3 years now without a hiccup.
everyone will have opinions on this obviously.
We use Lexmark, Brother, Xerox at work. Lexmark I thought was crap, until we bought some xerox. We only get about 1-2 years out of the xerox before things start breaking. (We're talking high end printers, $600-1000 range). We have a lot of small brother printers and multi-function units, they last about a year also. Constantly changing toners and drums because of print quality issues. Not saving any money there. I've always been a fan of the HP printers if you buy the professional units. ($300 and up) I've recently purchased some HP units and they seem made of plastic like everything else. Not sure how they will hold up. ($300-400 range)
The dells are made by Lexmark and Samsung typically. I personally have a Dell/samsung multi function and it's lasted about 10 years now. They seem to do ok, compared to some of the others.
You're going to get what you pay for. The $99 printer isn't going to last long and will cost you a bundle in toners and drums.
Any of the brands would be ok in the $400 range I'd think.

eeek. Do you need color? 3 or 4 toners at $70 each isn't cheap. Kids tend to print a lot when it's color just because they can FYI.Quote:

Brother usually has decent software for their MFC systems. You can insert some documents, hit scan and it shows up on your pc.
Yeah color is a bit spendy. I only use mine to print things that I sign, scan, and send back somewhere though. If you have kids doing reports and stuff, I can see how you might make a case for it.Quote:

As a Dell field service tech, I can legally say most of Dell's stuff sucks.
HP, too. But they are at least pretty decent with printers.
I use a small inkjet Canon for my personal use.
Lexmark Pro900 series is what we are running. As one who used HP, Cannon (stay very far away) etc i chose the LM. I was hesitant at first since we used one for work and the ink cost on a then low budget copier was excessive. This Pro series i purchased as LM advertises it is one of the lower cost ink users on the market. Well X copies later i finally replaced the black. 2 months later the color cartridges. 1.5 years later i have been through 3 black ink units!. The other printers i would have used 2x as many. This unit is a copier (color) scanner and faz, all functions i am using daily. The big seller for me on the LM is their warranty.This unit carries a no BS 3 year customer satisfaction, replacement coverage if it cannot be fixed. Also price wise the most competitive pricing along with salespeople who actually knew their product was Staples.
