I was just curious what people think about the evolution of 10/22's. I really don't care for the newer plastic covered aluminum receivers. But even beyond that, I ended up in one made in the early 70's and it's seems (to me) to be almost a whole different grade of rifle. I originally wasn't going to keep it, but after contemplating it again - I think I much prefer it to even to a brand new model.
I recently got a target model from another member here that has the metal housing. I went shopping for a scope last night and handled a couple new ones while I was there just to see the difference. They don't seem as substantial as the one I have. I realize the model I have is different but there did seem to be a pretty big leap.
I have a newer 10/22 and DFbrews has a much older one I think it's from the 70's. The older 10/22 is worth keeping his shoots better and is clearly a quality rifle. Not saying the new ones are bad, but I would much rather have an older one.
from what I have been told is the newer one have a plastic trigger housing and there is un wanted play so the triger pull is not the same every time you pull the trigger.
I was unable to find a clear distinction of what makes the older ones special. From what I read above I am guessing it the trigger group housing being metal is there anything else about them that makes them better? Are the new ones really just plastic now?

Guessing its a good one.
The receiver is metal on both but the finish on the old is smooth and the new ones are textured.
The trigger group is plastic on new ones, also the hammer and hammer bushings are one now where before it was hammer and two bushings.

If you have a Ruger 10/22® rifle built 2008 or later, it is likely that your trigger guard, magazine latch and trigger are made of plastic.
