Anyone have good experience with night-vision mono under for around $400 (used or new) There are a few models, but when they go up to $2-3000, you wonder what you are getting. Can't really try them out at the store.

rocktot, Relax guy. You post like a Charlie da knife WTB ad. :) There are some inexpensive ones out there. Currently Big 5 has ones for $99 (3.8 power reg $199) and a 5 power for $159 (reg $229). The $159 one is good till the 24th.
I have thought about the 5 power just to try. At these prices I would not expect much but if it gets you out to 100 yards then I know I would be happy.
My Russian Gen-1 will shoot 10" groups at 200 yards with a 1/4 moon and is a true starlight with IR detection. I do need to try it farther out as some have posted that it is good to 400 yards. I am sure that when it was new it was not cheap.
And yes, there are very nice ones out there but like you said not everyone has the $2K to spend. My thought is that something is better than nothing. [Coffee] Just a thought.
I've never gotten into the NV stuff because of the cost, but if there are Gen 1s floating around for under $500 I'd definitely be interested.
Jerry, do you have a source for those Russian surplus ones?
I have a link at work. These all came from Finland that were surplus. Most were NIB with all the acc. One guy found a deal and was selling them here. From what I could tell 100-200 came in.
At $249 shipped god only knows what he paid for them. I will post a link tomorrow. I do know that only through one forum they sold out in a couple of months once the reviews came in. I have range cams for the PSL/AKM/RPG and a couple of others. It was all new. batteries, spare lightbulbs, hoods, day filter. Mine is converted to use 2 Rechargeable AA batteries. It was built in 85.
Once you get used to the "fisheye" effect it is a very nice piece. Thoughts were that it was inferior to the AN/PVS-4 but was on par with it for the effective range. For the cost I love it. [Coffee]
