Free chains.

Didn't want to hijack this thread http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?p=451109

But my neighbor showed me something kinda cool.

He said if you head up to I-70 (and other highways that get a lot of snow and often have chain law in effect) and look at the guard rails in the passes often times you'll find lots of free chains.

Apparently the chains fall off semi trucks and the plows push them into the guard rails where they just pile up.

These aren't the wimpy chains you buy at Autozone either ... these chains are beefy! Of course they'll require some tweaking to fit your car or truck (since they're so big) but if you have a set of cable cutters and some heavy quick links you can get some pretty strong free chains.

Might not want to use these on a sedan, but he puts them on his pickup and they work great.

Got to be careful on that- once they come off the truck and hit the pavement CDOT technically owns them.
If you are seriously entertaining the thought let me know and I will contact some folks I know and see what we can find.
I know what you mean though-a buddy took some old 18 wheeler chains and made chains for his Bronco. Nothing ever stuck that beast with those on.

Ask the folks in the know BP if they can get me a set if you please Sir. I have the equipment to modify them to my truck. I go through chains about 1 pair a year even on my Tacoma [M2]

This was my plan for my bronco, I'm told they throw a lot of them on the dirt roads to the well pads at work.

Know if CDOT actually cares if you pick them up on the interstate and if there are any fines associated?

Never underestimate the stupidity/hubris/capricious nature of bureaucrats.

That said, my neighbor says he's been picking them up for years and never run into even the slightest problem with the authorities.

He specifically mentioned getting his last set on Loveland pass.
