Does anyone happen to have a set of headspace gauges for the AK74 that I might be able to borrow for a weekend?
I'm finishing a parts kit with a new barrel.
Thanks!

Take a russian 7n6 round and put one piece of scotch tape on the back of it and trim off excess with razor blade.
The scotch tape is .002" thick and will effectivly add .002" to the round.
Set the barrel so the bolt will just close on that case WITH OUT pressure.
Then try it with 2 pieces of tape(.004" thicker)
If it won't close or won't close with out pressure then drill your barrel pin hole, pin and the recheck headspace using the above method.
I've headspace all my AKs this way and it works every time.
This method may make the headspace on the tight side but I haven't had any extraction or chambering problems ever, and even if you do you can always lap the bolt back a .001 or .002"
I have a no go
Is it safe to assume this method will work for an AK in 7.62x39 and a Tula round?
Sorry, thought I had the quote in there. I'm referring to your scotch tape method.
Yes it will work for 762 ak rifles. I would take 2 or maybe 3 live rounds and put tape on the back of them. Check them in the chamber for any differences with the bolt closed and set it were you want then drill barrel pin hole.
Let's make sure we strip the bolt prior to this please.
Using 3-4 different rounds is a good plan, you get a better average.
Thanks guys. Using a couple rounds makes sense. I just wasn't sure if one piece of tape would be sufficient. Stripping the bolt was the first thing I did when i got my parts kit. [Beer]
I have 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r go/nogo sets if anyone needs to borrow
