I recently traded for a lower end 9mm that I am thinking about having color coated in some fashion, Dura Coat or some similar 'permanent' finish.
My question is this, I'm thinking of trying a 'test' coat first, to make sure I like the color. Yes, I mean Krylon. My question is will this make it too difficult to apply the real finish later on?
I see a lot of you have painted firearms, and most look really good, but have you tried to remove it afterwards?

With the exception of plastic guns, I'm sure a soak in any commercial paint remover will remove a rattle can paint job.

Not much original finish left to worry about. Only the grips are polymer/plastic.

Krylon Enamels have a tendency to remain somewhat soluble. Most enamels will break down with lacquer thinner, if that gets messy. There is always sandblasting. :)
If you are going to have it refinished it will have to be media blasted. Whatever you use as a test finish will die by abrasive media firing squad.
The absolute best base coat for Duracoat there is - is parkerizing.
