Awhile ago I mentioned in another thread about British police not carrying guns. I guess this is the case with most officers. Even after the below happened they are still sticking to their values and don't want to change anything. I guess if you have a country where guns are outlawed the police don't need guns either.
A little aside to the story, I guess the BG had a frag as well.
Story
Fiona Bone, 32, and her colleague Nicola Hughes, 23, were on a routine patrol in the Mottram district of Greater Manchester when they responded to reports of a house burglary on the Hattersley Estate. http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/...B_2343446c.jpg
Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone
Shortly before 11am the pair, who were unarmed, arrived at terraced property in Abbey Gardens in a marked police car.
As they approached the house, a man suddenly emerged and fired more than ten times at them before throwing a grenade in their direction.
Both women were fatally injured, one dying at the scene while paramedics were unable to save her colleague.
A short time later, Cregan walked into nearby Tameside police station and gave himself up.
Police said they believed Cregan or someone acting on his behalf had deliberately called the police to report a bogus burglary in a bid to lure officers into a deadly ambush.
Two people, one male and a female, who were believed to be in the house from where the bogus call to the police was made, were last night helping police with their inquiries.

And yet people complain when cops go a little overboard protecting their own lives.....

A lot of (if not most) Brits will interpret this story as more reason to implement increased gun control and bans even though the current ban clearly didn't work. They have every right to implement their cultural values in their country as long as they don't try to impose those same values on us.
Rather than criticize the British police or their laws, I would simply offer condolences and state that US cultural values permit people (including LEOs) to protect themselves rather than depend on criminals being deterred by gun bans.

Meanwhile in China... Law Enforcement crushes opposition!..
The Brits are fond of their traditions of unarmed police even if it no longer matches the reality. The EU is essentially open borders and once the Warsaw pact collapsed all sorts of guns and heavier stuff turned up on the black markets.
The law abiding citizens are totally disarmed while the government frets about kitchen knives but if you aren't law abiding you can buy a real AK or RPG.
There are more armed cops than there used to be but there is a level of crime there that doesn't happen outside of inner city hellholes in the US. I asked a Brit friend about how the unarmed cops dealt with gang controlled neighborhoods there. He said that the cops don't go into those places. It really sucks if you are not a gangster and live there.
