Residency Rule?

I went to a gunshop yesterday after selling my shotgun to pick up some cowboy action guns.

The person there (who was very friendly and spent a lot of time with me) told me that in order to purchase the handgun, I had to show proof of residency for at least 90 days. I was okay with long guns.

I have read through all of the Colorado legislation pages and looked through the CIB website and could not find any mention of this. Is this true, and am I just missing something in the legislation? I did do the searches last night around 1:00 am...so it might just be my brain.

He also recommended against buying more than one handgun at any time, unless I had a good reason to - consecutive serial numbers was his example. Is this also true?

Federal law requires you to have established residency for 90 days before you can purchase a handgun.

I have no idea why he told you not to purchase more than one gun that is BS you can purchase as many as you like. The only thing I could see would be a problem is if you purchase several handguns at a time on a regular basis. This might raise red flags with ATF because they might think you are engaged in dealing in firearms with out an FFL.

90 days only applies to legal aliens. If you've got an in-state driver's license/ID, and an in-state address, you're good to go.

Military with out-of-state ID need a copy of their PCS orders, and those have to be phoned in (can't do those background checks over the computer online).

If a single purchaser buys more than one handgun within a 7-day period, the FFL does indeed have to fill out an additional form (report of multiple handgun sales). Generally not a problem as long as you're not straw-buying, but straw-buying for illegal resale is what the mulitple sales form is intended to prevent.
