I played football from when I was 8 till my last day in college at 23 *(RS/MRS). Now for this twit of a doc to say brain damage, well i'll give him some...I was misdiagnosed by a stupid know it all neureo, who we proved to be a dumbass through 2nd/3rd/4th opinion. This thing really hits home. My undergrad is in Physics, with an emp in engineering. I doubt I would of been able to do that with the likes of mr nanny. GAAHHHHH [Bang]

I don't care for his reasoning but sports take away from budgets for books and teachers.

when I was in high school in 96 our books still had the USSR in them. 7 years after the collapse. but the football team had gotten their uniforms and equipment every year.

Wilfred, you might be right about smaller school programs, but bigger school football programs provide revenue for not only the football program but also other athletic teams at the school and do not take any money from students.

I don't want much of anything "banned". But I am glad the information about the perils of football are getting mainstream attention. At least with the infromation available, people can make an informed decision.

I know a PhD prof in Engineering who played line for the Browns...smart dude. I also know a 34 year old who can barely function after multiple concussions. His choice, but the impact affect people differently.

I don't like a law that says you have to wear a helmet riding a MC, but if you crack up and become a veggie, I don't want to have to pay for your stupidity though my insurance $, which we all currently do. Nanny laws and Insurance...

Same thing with football. Heck, toss skiing in there too. The cautious subsidize the thrill seekers in many respects.

Live freely informed. Then make a choice. I've seen someone up close with a brain injury, a TBI. There can be recovery but generally not a full recovery. I would not let a kid play football. Those concussions are much worse on kids while the brain is still forming.

I don't see football as having a great future. Brain injury is fundamental to the play and it would be hard to change that. It'll end up like boxing where kids from the bottom of society go for it.

Jack, I'm going to have to pick a bone with you. First and foremost, you're article is about college/university ball teams. That is a whole other discussion with different rules/regs, so forth. In that environment, a good team is beneficial for a school.

However, on the k-12 system I personally take the side of Wulf. I am a public school teacher and constantly see budgets reduced and whole programs cut (regardless of how successful they have been) just to ENHANCE the athletics programs (regardless of how BAD they have been). In the k-12 system a lot of YOUR tax dollars are wasted on new gym equipment/uniforms/etc that are simply just NOT needed, while classrooms go neglected.

I'm not going to get into a debate or a war or a case of statistic versus statistic. I just want to let you know that I am ground zero and see waste happening every hour of every day when it comes to the money literally thrown at athletic organizations, whether at a 1A or 5A school.

Parental support goes a LOOOOOONG way. If parents would pick up phones or make appointments with admins/supers or volunteer 30 minutes every other month, actually be PARENTS and INVOLVED in their childs' life instead of make teachers babysit and discipline brats, the change in American education would be amazing. We really could be the "best in the world" (without going into that whole discussion).

All that being said, yes I played football.

Football? Ever see a Soccer game? No pads but maybe shin pads.
Nothing like 2 players going up to headbutt the ball,,only too slam knoggins together.
