Ways to storing guns

I'm going to a very Commie State for a internship, may stay there for one 2 years or 3. I'm thinking of leaving some of my "Assault Weapons" with my family over here at CO. They are not into guns, so they won't take care of them for me once a while. Now I think I have to do some long time storage preparation on those guns.
Most of them are solid steel and wood guns, Norinco M14, M14 EBR clone, AK-47, AK-74...
Should i just go ahead and cover them with Cosmoline or should i used other method. I store them in a WWII M1 Grand chest for easy transportation. Not humidity controlled safe.

Put them in some sort of long-term storage bags like these (not endorsing that particular product, but they're the first thing that came up in Google).

That will protect them in storage. you might want to put a padlock on that chest to keep the kiddos out.

Maybe ask a local gun shop to hold em for you. Or try a storage place and get a little closet storage area. How many are you looking to store?

I have two locks on that chest. I don't really want to pay for someone to store them.

My real question is should i just go all out Cosmoline? they are such pain in the ass to clean, I don't want to use them if i can.

Their ins may not cover long term storage AND upon return to CO he will need to do 4473's on all FFL stored guns.

Buy a safe, find a place at your family's house out of the way to put it. Lock guns in safe until you return.

I never bought a safe for myself, i moved a lot so i use a crate.
Like this one but for M1 Garands, i bought it from an antique store.
It's sealed with paint and wax very well, i've never had problem with it so far, i installed two lock on it to keep roommates' guests away.

Try using using an on site construction tool box like the one Rigid makes:

It's pretty light for as strong as it is, and can be carried by two people easily.
Holds some where around a crap ton, and is pretty secure with the right padlocks.
The locks are set in so pry and cut proof.
Also... it's Colorado. I would have to think a good coat of oil and you should be in pretty good shape for a while. I've had all my guns in a box just like this for almost a year and no problems at all. It's also been in a non climate controlled garage.
