Well I'm not sure he could be any more spot on about this.
A lot of the kids are doped up with drugs that weren't even considered when I was a kid. ADD/HD was something you learned to deal with and manage. Our self-esteem didn't mean a damn thing. It's good to know one's true place in the world.
Did you watch the video that preceded that? Megyn Kelly (bless her she's gorgeous!) went over the survey they referenced in the beginning of the narcissism video, and I hate to say it, but part of my generation and the generation behind me is just that- they think so damn highly of themselves. Hey, I remember playing sports growing up, if you didn't win you lost, there were no trophies for 3rd place (there was for 2nd, but it was considered back then to be the 1st loser). Then it seems the kids growing up a few years behind me get told they're special, and there are no winners or losers... BULLSHIT. Get into the real world- the winners are guys like John D. Rockerfeller, Trump, John Noveske (RIP), the Haliburton execs, and the losers are the guys you see at the corner of Auraria and Speer with the signs asking for money. So I agree with the sentiment, the youth has this over-inflated sense of self-worth and self-opinion... It makes me sick. If you're so great how come you don't have a job?
Doubt they'll think that when they get out of college can't get jobs and then have to move in with their parents.
I think the over inflated sense of self worth and self opinion are because society has created this machine that tells you, goto school, goto college, you'll get a great job and everything will be fine. When in reality colleges were institutions created to convey wealth from one generation to another not to create wealth as they will have you believe (There's a reason ivy league colleges cost so much). Middle class america has been sold a lie. There are only so many seats at the table.
No one likes their kids to feel bad I hate it when mine do, that being said I believe you learn and grow the most from when you feel bad, make a mistake or fail. One of the major problems with our society is that parents won't let their kids loose so they can grow all this raw raw your the best "whatever " even though they are far from the best is causing children to not live in reality. I support and encourage my kids but try hard to teach them actions have consequences both good and bad and even if you try and fail you still learned by trying. I don't think most people especially kids have any idea that their actions have consequences, don't feel like working no problem the government will take care of me don't pass classes no big deal I'll just sit home and play video games and mom/dad will tell me it's ok your a champ.
