I don't believe you can simply shoot a cougar, or say a bear, simply because it's on your property. It has to be posing a threat to your life. If something is merely meandering through your yard, or picking through your trash, you're not allowed to shoot it. Don't quote me on this, but it is how I've come to understand it so far.

Oddly enough I ran across something about this in the regs a while back and you won't believe it. You can shoot wildlife causing damage to real property like your car but your pets don't count. Sounds real dumb to me.
