Gee, and the wife and I going to Buffalo Creek last night seems so mundane right now....glad everybody is safe and sound.
Wow, sorry to just be seeing this now. Glad you made it back in one piece, sorry I missed the chance to come help pull you out.
I do have to say, this is making me think about re-evaluate my habits. I always let someone know what trail I'm running, but most weekends I wheel alone with my kids, and usually cell reception is pretty bad most of the trail. While my rig is outfitted pretty well and I have a ton of lights and recovery gear, I'm not sure how well we'd handle a bad situation like this. Even changing a tire can be a major issue if you've slipped off the trail and are sitting at a weird angle. Glad you're ok, looking forward to the AAR. I need to spend some more time with my ham radio and maybe I'll stash the spare in the jeep. I've got some of those blankets that zip up into nice flat packages that are great for fitting behind the jeep, but I might want to think about a sleeping bag for the kids too.
Cheers to all you guys who jumped at the opportunity to come out and help. Lots of good people on this board.
Anybody have any experience with the emergency locator beacon options like the SPOT device?
Brian,
get et bags for your kids and have 3 days of food that will be for them mainly to keep them occupied and calm and feel like it was planned camping. You and I and pretty much anyone on here can deal with sleeping next to a fire and maintaining the fire thru the night and let the kids sleep in the vehicle nice and warm. This is how I plan when I go 4 wheeling with my kids even though I have a bag for me and plenty of food and water. Typically my bag gets used for th bedding for the runts. This why I mentioned the fire etc.
Maybe if I can find the time this week, I'll lay out the contents of my recovery and emergency bags - for info and critique. I always enjoy reading over what everybody else is carrying around, just to compare notes. It's still plenty warm now, but we're getting close to when it'll be time to swap for the winter kits in the other vehicles as well.
tmleader - not sure it's the right way to say it, but I'm looking forward to hearing what worked and didn't worked with the young ones.
For me when I head for the back country, its usually a hachet, spade (e-tool), jack, rifle, side-arm, ka-bar, a few small LED lights, tac/weapon light, (weather) radio/light with crank-charge, first aid kit, flint/steel, wetfire packs, compass, tow strap, paracord, thermal blanket, food, water, extra clothes/jacket, garbage bags, etc...
I need a new come-along, as those are life savers and my last one got messed up. Also, depending on how I feel and where I'm going, sometimes I'll bring a 14" chainsaw, as they can be enormously useful in some situations (like getting your skid-plate "beached" on a log/tree, making a lever to help lift out of a ditch, firewood, etc)...
Been thinking of getting a small HAM radio (and learning how to use it) after seeing how this played out with the comms.....
While I was still working on building up the road to try to keep from sliding I sent her down the trail to explore and play. That worked great for a while. I am going to make sure to have a charged tablet for next trip. With my daughter if I can plug her into something she is a happy camper. She was a bit freaked out.
One of the other mistakes was assuming that the tent was good place to store the sleeping bags (which it is actually not bad) but with the vehicle tilted like that I was not comfortable shifting the weight on top to that side more (tent opens driver side) and grabbing the sleeping bags. So I either need to pack blankets in the car, or keep the sleeping bags in the car. Probably going to just keep the bags in the car.
glad thing went your way in the end. a winch is in order i think eh...
Any pics? :)
sent from a soup can and some string..
