I carry a Becker Companion.

Massive, inexpensive and high quality steel. I have a Becker Brute too, and have used both in the backcountry. The brute has a wider back near the rear edge to use for batoning the blade. I'm starting to appreciate the kukri design more and more though. the sheath leaves something to be desired, so I wrapped it in paracord for durability. Hell, I wrap EVERYTHING in paracord.
I just bought a Stryker and it's 5/16 inch steel, just massive.

I steer towards heavier knives mostly because I've broken the thinner ones while misusing them. I just dont want some casual misuse to damage my only tool. The Becker Companion I bought for 47 bucks from tomarskabars.com it's a bit more expensive now, but it's a no-frills kinda knife. No fancy finish, no fancy scales (although you can buy some) and a kydex sheath. I'm just a heavy knife guy nowadays. ESEE and the like are good knives, but they are pricey for my tastes.
