You are right about that; we certainly can't expect any of this to actually make sense. At this point it really doesn't matter anyway because the moment is gone....pick a character, any character, and we can get on watching multiple episodes of Morgan and his Horse or Carol the Self Loathing Survivalist before we get back to Negan.

Had it not been used when it was. There would have been 3 - 4 less serious fighters on Team Rick.
