Depends on how committed you are I guess. My Tacoma has an outlet in the bed & I found a pancake compressor at Harbor Freight that pulls just under the rated amps for like $75. The on-board stuff I've seen is pretty spendy but it's technically one less device to worry about forgetting if you're going to use it frequently. For me the little HF is perfect for inflation after airing-down for trail runs & such.
I've heard of people replacing the A/C compressor with just a regular compressor as well. Supposedly much more quiet and powerful than an electric one. Like you said, that takes a certain level of dedication to remove A/C.

Like it, but it isn't my favorite.
